NOTE ON GETTING OLCI OFFER ON OAL ORIGINATING:
If the AF LP flight segment is down line from your originating segment operated by another airline which forces you to use the OAL’s checkin system, you can manually use the AF website to check-in for the downline AF flight and still get the offer. For example, GRU-MEX-CDG sold as AM14 / AM 6103 (operated as AF179), you can checkin via AM as usual. Before or after, go to the AF website for the currency you want to pay for the upgrade in. Check-in using just your PNR / Lastname and the AF flight number you want to check-in for. It will allow a mid-trip check-in and will offer the LP upgrade if eligible.

While it's not "as good" as being by the window, that alone would not make me not do it.

I’ve got two trips this summer in J: TIJ-MEX-CDG and then DXB-CDG.
For Trip 1: I’m flying AM and connecting to AF in MEX. I see posts about manually checking into my AF flight 30 hours prior to departure, even though my first segment is operated by AM. How do I access this feature on the AF website to get the UG offer?
For Trip 2: If I’m offered the opportunity to UG to LP and the price is right, what lounge do LP pax use in DXB? How’s the ground experience?
Finally, 2 quick questions:
1) Does fare class impact the price of the UG? For example, to cost of upgrading from Z vs. full J would be higher. (Similar to what KL does.)
2) Does UG to LP also impact mileage earnings (i.e., more miles)? Specifically, I’m a Delta Medallion member and curious if the ticket is reissued as revenue LP.

If you can't see the P cabin, it means that there is no offer for you. You can ask again at MEX at the counter.
In DXB, you will benefit from the Marhaba Meet & Greet ground service (escort from check-in through immigration and security to lounge and from lounge to plane). The lounge used for P pax is the Ahlan lounge. You can read a review with picture in the AF lounge thread.

For your other questions :
1) nobody knows the details of the very mysterious algorithm of AFKL paid upgrades. From all the data points we have collected, it seems it plays a minor role.
2) No, you will earn the miles of your originally booked fare/cabin

You should look in the AF app, that will be the most convenient. Do not create a FB account (you don't need this to use the app), as it will create a big mess with your SM account and your miles are likely to end up in the FB account. Import the booking in AF app and look at the seat map and see if you can see the P cabin. If the case, the price of the upgrade will be mentioned in the legend at the bottom. If OK, you can change your seat and pay the upgrade price.

For my second trip, I’m going to be flying from DXB-CDG-JFK. If I decide to UG to LP on the DXB-CDG route but am flying in J from CDG-JFK (LP isn’t offered on my flight), will I have access to the LP lounge during my transit in CDG?

Thanks for the helpful info, Goldorak! My layover in CDG is about 12 hrs, and I was thinking about heading into the city. If I do so, would I still be able to access the LP lounge when I return to catch my flight to JFK? (12 hours in the LP lounge seems a bit excessive…)

Given the relatively lower cost of upgrading to LP from MEX and DXB--both routes that I'm flying (for the first time)--I keep wondering if I'd be crazy NOT to enjoy the LP product. (Honestly, it's been on my bucket list since it was presented.) Most people rave about it, but then I read this one blogger who enjoyed it but wasn't perhaps as impressed: https://www.bougiemiles.com/air-fran...o-first-class/

This poses a problem for Delta MQD earn, which will remain at 40% of mileage flown. (As opposed to 60%, which you get for a paid P or F fare.)

I have been checking the app and the web site since T30 and now T22 even though there is 1 seat left but no upgrade option whatsoever. I am on BCN-CDG-MEX-GRU ticket, wondering if it’s because the business almost full and so AF hopes to sell the 1 LP at prime price or because of my route?
