Any idea about when the next wave of strikes happens?

af fp Apr 24, 2018 4:45 am

There is a general civil servants strike scheduled for May 22 that worries me.

Word is that it won't be announced until after the May work schedule is locked on (April 25 or 26?).

Cat and Mouse game

And I fear May 3rd... on most days I can circumvent strike days by changing my travels or using other airlines. But on that day, AF is the only possibility to get me from Paris to where I need to go. Bummer.

I am fearing May 3 as well, flying EDI to CDG with myself, wife and two parents (their first trip within Europe). Keeping fingers crossed that is not a day, or that will get re-routed through AMS on KLM or worst case if they cancel the flight be able to snag a last minute ticket on one of the two Easy Jet flights (if others don't do the same thing).

Booked a discount flight through Carnival Cruise line to Barcelona with the last leg via Air France/Joon from Paris > BCN on May 5th. Scared that we will be without a way to get to Barcelona due to the strike. Does anyone know if they will announce the new dates of planned strike days soon?

kvncrw Apr 24, 2018 9:23 pm

I believe the union will announce on April 26, unless talks progress. We live in hope.

ty97 Apr 25, 2018 12:37 am

I transferred through CDG on Monday and have to say that I was surprised by the limited number of cancelations on the board. Of course, that is no solace for those whose flights were canceled, but I expected it to be much worse.

Supposedly will be able to cancel my flights in two weeks and switch carriers from AF. Will confirm that later today or tomorrow. What a mess this has been.

I could not sleep last night, so I started thinking about scenarios for the future.
Maybe some bedside tacticians can join this futile exercise.

AF has submitted a simple question to staff vote. It is simply an anonymous consultation to express opinion, without legal implications.
Air France staff consultation. | Air France - Corporate.
Vote starts on 26 april and results will be known on May 4.
It is likely that unions will contest the vote on all kinds of procedural issues.

Unions can soon announce new strike days (probably on 26 April).
I was wondering if they will announce a big load of strike days (my guess).
Will there be strikes before 4 May? Or will it be too risky to do so?

1. Assuming that the vote is strongly in favor of accepting the contract terms, would pilots keep on striking, knowing that they asked for an immediate raise around 11%? Pilots are a minority in AF staff and the SNPL could argue that their membership wants to strike.

2. Assuming that the vote is strongly negative, what will really happen? The CEO has put himself, and the company, in an impossible situation. Without a group CEO who will manage? OK there is still an AF CEO who handled the negotiations, but can decisions be made with a lame duck Group CEO.

3. Assuming that the vote is "mixed" (say 55% in favor), what will happen?

Frankly, I have been delaying making a lot of booking over June-August. In many cases AF is more convenient, but ....

The SNPL has announced strikes for 3, 4, 7 and 8 May.
An interesting SNPL document can be found here (in French):
Négociations catégorielles pilotes | Syndicat National des Pilotes de Ligne (SNPL)

Apparently negotiations are finally making some progress.
The SNPL insist that they are pilots raises have always resulted from specific pilot negotiations resulting in a pilot agreement. The united front is breaking.

Damn! I am flying MAD-CDG-PVG on the 3rd. Let’s see how that goes...
