Price war dwveloping
It appears that westjet and AC are going to war on fares based on announcements and ads in the last few days. This could get interesting.

Examples?
Even look at the whole midnight sale thing going on, as posted on here already. |
When I compare how much I spend on my remaining flight pass segments to how much I could have paid today on my usual route, the only thing that comes to my mind is the Silly Walk from the Monty Python. :D

It appears that competing seat sales are going to get hotter as reservations do not appear to be picking up in the whole industry. Westjet appears to be in a panic mode with new planes coming and their SWA code share plan in disarray. Also Porter is eating WJA's lunch on the eastern triangle and AC is matching WJA fares on their now less than frequent flights in that zone.

West Jet has just not got YYZ figured out? Amazing and for sure Porter is killing them on a routes West Jet was doing poorly on.

Well I hope so. Not one summer promo has come out yet. Time to include July!

http://www.aircanada.com/en/offers/a...nt_june09.html to put this in the same add along with dirt cheap flights to Brazil is misleading in my view to suggest that the fare to Hong Kong is a "great" fare... |
From the order that the sales are announced, it does seem that WestJet is the one starting them. AC is just matching.
And if you think things are interesting now, wait until the fall. West Jet has 9 new planes arriving in the next 8 months, their codesharing plan with Southwest is "delayed", and they no longer have a contract with Transat for charters (which accounted for about 6 planes full time in the winter plus many extra flights from their regular fleet on weekends). Should be some good deals. |

I would'nt get too excited. With AC on the verge of CCAA , there could be a lot fewer airplanes with a maple leaf on the tail flying Canadian skies in the future. The laws of supply and demand will once again favour those who can hang around long enough to provide the supply.
Actually I think AC is further away from CCAA than we think... don't think the feds want to let them sneak in with all the rest of the crap going on... if anything the mediator in the pension dispute has bought them a few more months of coming up with ways to win back market share. |
Porter is targeting the high fare paying customers that demand Rapidair-like schedule from downtown Toronto to other business centers. These sorts of passengers are anything but Westjet's bread and butter.
Maybe a better barometer of who's lunch is being eaten might be to see who's making money year after year and who isn't!!!!? WestJet offers a decent schedule with 2 in the morning, 2 late afternoon /early evening and a late evening clean up flight. That works for most people and minimizes flying around empty aircraft from 10 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon! I'm always amazed at how dead the airports are at these times. |

WS just announced a two-day summer seat sale, so AC should match shortly. The fares aren't as good as some I've seen recently, but they aren't bad for high season travel.
