Question Transfers through PDX

Does anyone have recent experience transiting through PDX when coming from Europe to Canada?
I've gone through PDX when traveling from YVR to FRA but not in the opposite direction. Do you have to clear US Customs ("land" in the US) before continuing or is there a "connection" path that sends you to a Canada-bound gate?
I want to bring some items home that would not be allowed entry to the US and since they will be in my carry-on, I'm worried about getting probed by US security.

Thanx,

Commander Bob
Or do I just have to smoke 'em all?

Wirelessly posted (goingaway's phone: BlackBerry8900/4.6.1.114 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

You have to clear us customs and immigration before going to a TSA checkpoint for your next flight. The US does not have airport access for intl connecting passengers, everyone gets admitted to US as part of transit before leaving

I'd send them Fedex directly to Canada, though you'll be hit with broker fees, but better than losing them at US Customs (and possibly getting fined too).

I'd mail said items to Canada registered mail - better than risking confiscation, and with the quality of Cubans, well worth the Postal Fees
