I was on a flight from YYC to IAH and there was a grand total of 6 pax on an Airbus 320. They lost a lot of money on that flight!
I was in Y and the FA wouldn't let me sit next to a friend that I ran into who was travelling in J though. The reason was that if she let me sit in J "then everybody would want to sit in J". We could have done so, and had J seats left over, even if all the crew sat in J as well...

On the topic of customer service suggestions, here's an interesting article on how US Airways handled things after Captain Sully glided his Airbus onto the Hudson River. While the circumstances were obviously unique, it's interesting to see that even a low (bottom) ranked airline can rise to the occasion.
