Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

I envy you that you CAN plan stops in exotic places

Still, one of the best moments of one of my RTWs earlier this year was when you and I were exchanging emails while I was on LH F on the 380 FRA-SIN and you replied:

"You've just crossed over the border into Afghanistan"
and then later you wrote
"If you can stay awake another 90 minutes, Mt. Everest will be outside your window"

AWESOME stuff. For me.

A 3 week vacation would be difficult for me to take.

A miniRTW with three of those stops would be virtually impossible.

And to be honest, I don't want to spend 3 weeks in a new location. I prefer a few days, and then if I want to come back, I can. I want to spend more time in various cities that I've previously spent a couple days in, but there are also some cities I was glad to be done with at the end of my 48 hours

Thats what I like my min-rtws too. Go to places that otherwise would be expensive to get to, make it a 6-8 week trip.

For that, 150k in J with 3 stops on points that cost zero to acquire - Aeroplan cannot be beat, even with scamcharges.

There are no producs left in Star Alliance that I havent flown that I would want to fly just for the sake of it.

I hear both of you. I have (finally) succeeded in adjusting my career to afford me sufficient time and money - at the same time!!! - that permits extended getaways.

Yes, I too should probably sleep a bit more on extended flights, but can't resist peeking outside whenever overflying Greenland, traversing the Alps or skimming down the Potomac. Aisle seats: you can have 'em!

That's a fair comment. I was pretty happy to escape Bangkok after two days. I'm a country rube, and find that rural areas offer as much or more to me than large urban centres.

But...following my time in whichever location I've visited, it is nice to indulge in the comfort of a proper first class lounge in preparation for the long journey home.

I intend to swap the AC J for some LH F goodness in a week or two, which will obviously cause the taxes/fees to skyrocket.
So can we grab a late lunch/early dinner on the 26th?

In SIN? Sure. Although I wasn't planning on clearing immigration, but I guess I have enough time.

I noticed that J award seats on transatlantic flights operated by Air Canada (especially ex-LHR) and Lufthansa have more availability compared to seats on other Star Alliance airlines (UA/SN/LX). Is it because people are consciously avoiding redeeming on those AC/LH flights which carry high/obnoxious scamcharges ?
