Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Just booked the following:

YEG - ORD - UA - J
ORD - CDG - UA - J
CDG - TXL - LH - J
*open jaw*
MAD - BRU - SN - J
BRU - JFK - SN - J
*overnight stopover*
LGA - ORD - UA - Y
ORD - YEG - UA - J

Booked two seats, came to $190.46 and 90,000 miles each, plus the $30 call centre fee.

I was hoping to include the segment from TXL-MAD on LX via ZRH, but that would have put me over MPM.

You read it right, it is, $132 in YQ is the two short LH segments, the NH segment and the AC segment.

Wink Two Free Business Class Tickets

I am new to this forum but on the trail of this Aeroplan bunch, Air Canada itself and the regulator(s) here in Canada. Just booked two business class tickets for Oct, 2014 from Calgary to Heathrow return using some 190,000 points.
The tab for my two "free" reward tickets was around $2600 for two. About $900 each was for a fuel surcharge ergo $1800.

My research indicates that an Airbus A330 uses fuel equivalent to $45,000 one way or return say $90,000 CDN, based on JetB fuel costs. There are 37 business seats and some 200+ economy on the aircraft. Therefore, my two seats at roughly $2000 in fuel surcharges appear to be paying for roughly 2% of the entire fuel cost of the flight. (I am not sure what relevance this surcharge for fuel has to do with some sort of escalation or hedging of fuel costs which I could understand, and not paying for the actual fuel bill. What are the other 200 passengers paying for fuel in their ticket prices?)

This would appear to be some form of margin grab and I am not sure who the culprit is AEROPLAN or Air Canada as neither will acknowledge in writing my requests for clarity on these charges.

I understand that two Business class tickets return from Calgary to Heathrow at $2600 is pretty good value, given that regular cost would be in the range of $12000 and this probably stops some of my fat cat Calgary bourgeoisie from worrying about this. However, my five "truly free" nights at the Grosvenor Square Marriott in Mayfair in London next October are without fuel surcharges, concierge fees, doorman tips, chambermaid tips, et al. Hats off to Marriott, and a great big Boo-(no Yah) to these pilferers at Aeroplan / Air Canada.

As I work my way through the quagmire of CTA and others responsible for regulating these people I will post an update.

Merry Christmas

First, welcome to the zoo.

And yes, that's about the reality of AeroScam co-pay.

My research indicates that an Airbus A330 uses fuel equivalent to $45,000 one way or return say $90,000 CDN, based on JetB fuel costs. [...]
Should be Jet A-1, not Jet B.

Not really a margin grab. FF programs were predicated upon giving away seats expected to be unsold hence with zero marginal value.

However, with AeroScam separation from AC, and given that they sell tons of miles at very low prices (about .6 cent/mile to CIBC, more like 0.8 cent/mile to TD), effectively AeroScam sponges the whole inventory of otherwise empty seats. And some.

So, at the end of the day, there is no way that AC can possibly give them more seats at a price consistent with the price of seats they would not otherwise sell. So, Aeroscam has turned into a seat selling mechanism. Just look at what your 90,000 miles at 0.8 cent/mile will buy in that context. A J seat?

Answer: the co-pay, AKA as fuel surcharge or "carrier administration fee" or some BS like that.

[...]

You are wasting your time. The CTA won't get involved.

Nothing in the tariffs about Aeroplan tickets, apart from some IRROPS stuff whereby they are only obliged to accommodate you on Star alliance, while on revenue tickets, would be on any airline which they have an interlining agreement with.

2013 Q3: http://aircanada.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=715
Available seat miles (millions) (ASM) : 19,404
Fuel litres (millions): 1,111
Economic fuel cost per litre (cents): 89.6
... 1111*0.896 / 19404 = $0.0513 per seat per mile

YYC-LHR-YYC = 8744 miles (http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=yyc-lhr-yyc)

So the total fuel cost per seat (return) is $448.58

Also, anyone else notice that on Aeroplan's website the fuel surcharges don't show up until the next page? Isn't that against the 'all in pricing regulations' that were brought in earlier this year?

Any passengers booking their reward tickets with UA miles are not paying ANY fuel surcharge which is why we affectionately refer to them as "scam charges".

YYZ-GVA (AC J)
GVA-FRA (LH J)
FRA-BKK (TG F)
BKK-SYD (TG F) Stop
SYD-BKK (TG F)
BKK-CDG (TG F)
CDG-YYZ (AC J)

$1,758 in "taxes" per ticket.

After a week we changed to return via PEK on CA in J and got a refund in taxes of $750 each. It's still highway robbery and for the number of toasters I could get with the points I'm tempted just to buy a ticket to SYD via Asia for about $4,500 instead.

YXU-YYZ (AC Y)
YYZ-IST (TK Y), week in Istanbul
IST-ADB (TK Y), few days in Izmir and Ephesus
ADB-IST (TK Y)
IST-ORD (TK Y)
ORD-YXU (UA Y)

$110.08

Turkish seems to have quite a bit of award flight availability.

I'm very happy to be travelling from YXU, and am still a little stunned that I was able to do it, especially the UA segment from ORD. When I lived in YOW, my feeling was that the Rapidair connections to YYZ were next to impossible to include.
