Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

We talked about it last night and our trip is to focus on France, so we might try Lufthansa - Vancouver - Frankfurt - Marseille and then Paris - Frankfurt - Vancouver. Gets us where we want to be and no AC metal

YYC-LHR return in August $492.75 per person plus 60,000 miles (I think). What a rip off, it devalues the value of our air miles this YQ charge; its sneaky, and disingenuous.

So would flying via FRA on LH metal been cheaper? (Star alliance award)

Learning and learning fast, note by the number of my posts only recently joined, had I known that it would be cheaper to do that I would have given it a try. This was booked in March.
There will always be a next time.
So am I correct to understand that the taxes and fees are not that high on LH metal? How does one book that, through aeroplan or * Alliance?

You book it through Aeroplan as a Star Alliance reward. You don't have to state such because, as long as you have 1 segment on non-AC metal, it automatically becomes a Star Alliance reward.

You might "compare" what others have stated for taxes on a similar itin. The change fee is only $90 (I think). You have to decide if it's worth it as you'll be taking a circuitous route. Of course, you could expand your jaunt and include up to 2 more stops, in addition to LHR.

Not exactly the price I wanted however I tried maybe 6 routes 3 agents all carried out manual calculations which I suspect brought the cost up.

In any respect I basically booked what I would class as RTW in J 4 weeks out till departure for $443.63.

YUL/LHR - AC J - Stop
LHR/BKK -TG J
BKK/SIN - TG J - Stop
SIN/BNE - SQ J - Stop - POT
BNE/AKL - AIRNZ J
AKL/LAX - AIRNZ J - Stop - 18 Hours
