Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

We're planning on going to Europe next year and if at all possible, I'd love to avoid paying AP fees of $450 pp. To avoid that fuel surcharge, do I have to go through the US or just not fly on AC metal? Could I fly Lufthansa Vancouver direct to Frankfurt to avoid it? Or just a stop in the US?

Tx

Surprisingly, not my experience anymore.

Flying:
YVR-HKG-SIN (destination)
SIN-IST (stop)
IST-VIE (stop)
VIE-YYZ-YVR

The YVR-HKG and YYZ-YVR legs are AC. The combined taxes, fees, charges, and surcharges come to $155.50 CAD. ^^
