Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

KIX-BKK

I booked two Aeroplan business class tickets between KIX and BKK on TG (Thai Airways) on the web. It cost me 30,000 Aeroplan points per person and initially no extra fees of any kind.

However, at KIX, I was reminded by a Thai agent that I had to pay 5,300 yen (2,650 yen x 2) KIX airport facility fee. There were no other charges of any kind.

Incidentally I flew YVR-NRT-ITM on a regular ticket (about 1,050 per person).

It is quite clear that better deals are found when and where no Canadian airport and AC flights were not involved.

Wow, with US/UA there would have been some ridiculous charges. How did this happen?

I had the exact same experience, booked KIX-BKK-KIX on TG for 30,000 and $0 taxes and fees. At check in at KIX the TG agent asked for some fee, I can't remember the amount. Anyways, we told them they had no right asking for money for a flight I booked through AP and they let us board no problems. No fees were asked for on the return BKK-KIX.
