Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Why do you have YQ? I thought the AC segments to connect to international segments do not incur YQ? Or my understanding is wrong, it is more like very low YQ that we dont count it much?

Don't believe there are any EU countries that regulate fuel surcharges like countries like Australia and Brasil do. Obviously Germany doesn't so you won't find any LH flights and I think all AC flights from Europe have them. From Europe you're best with LX, SK,LO, TP or TK to NA.

Booked YVR-IST via YUL - YVR-YUL is on AC Rouge and then YUL-IST on TK. All economy. I found the taxes and fees to be surprisingly low...

After BA/LH cancelled flight fiasco and bombing last week that killed 20, I've decided to forego CAI and changed to following:

Not the best use of 30k miles but cheap in comparison to what I was looking to pay for my route:
FCO - SPU Sept 6
SPU - ZAG - LIS Sept 13
All on Croatian airlines. Plus a $40 CAD ticket from FLR -> FCO and still much cheaper than anything I was looking at.
