Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

BKK-HAN TG - 5J (destination)
SGN-PEK CA - 5J (open jaw)
PEK-LHR CA - 2F/5J (<24 hrs)
LHR-YYZ AC - 5J

Scamcharges: 926.56 + booking fee per person Getting 5 seats limits a lot of options.

I will monitor to see if other airlines opens up and switch... hopefully will get lower scamcharges compared to the change fees.

Any other suggestions?

Yeah probably half that scam charge is LHR YYZ, as I think HND is protected so that’s about $550 alone. So fly back via ZRH (LX) or ORD (UA) (or similar).

Intra Europe flights are cheap and readily available but if you book separately remember to book a decent connection time (I’d recommend overnight).

Edit - If my dates are correct both 3/11 and 3/14 (plus others? Excluding 3/13) have a ZRH BRU YYZ for 275,000 miles (ie 55k x 5) and $364 for 5 people all J available ... So it’s not exactly direct but it saves quite a few dollars. Likely any routing outside of LHR will save taxes.

Difficulty with that is there is already one open jaw used, so you are basically flying out of London NMW. I did a quick search in mid March and there is good availability many days LHR-ZRH-YUL-YTZ. (Last bit on Y, but you fleet free booze and a snack)
Edit: also some from LCY

Booked mini RTW before I was SE100k, Canada to HND, BKK, SIN, PER, IST, AMS, Canada, all in J for 2 of us -- TPac and TAtl on AC metal. Surcharges were over $1600. Months later when I reached SE100k, I called to change the one domestic flight on the return (SE100k opens seats that weren't previously available so we wouldn't have to have a 6 hour layover in YYZ). That changed caused a reissue of ticket and since I was now SE100K, there were no longer surcharges. Paid $150 for the change, got $1676 refund on SQ.

YVR-SEA-ICN-SYD pot (AC-OZ-OZ)
SYD-SIN-HKG stop (SQ - SYD-SIN is actually SYD-CBR-SIN in a 777-300 on one flight number. Didn't think SQ actually released 773 seats to partners, but there you go)
HKG-TPE-YVR (BR)

Booked for 3 pax in J, but SIN-HKG only had 2 seats and TPE-YVR only had one.

About $580 per person, of which $275 was YQ

Anyway, I don't have the receipt yet, but they quoted something like $1039 per person. Does that sound right? Keep in mind I'm SE.

I plan to make changes (LH F for the TATL, and some kind of F for Asia to Europe), so there will be opportunities to recalculate, but I'm a little miffed by this. I've flown NH/TG/LH F SFO-Asia-Europe-SFO for significantly less.

They did have a hell of a time getting this booked, so I wonder if they did something manually and screwed it up.

Edit: Receipt just came through. 459.52 per person. That sounds much closer to what I expected. I guess the phone agent was wrong

Is that 137.90 or 48.40 for the YQ? I can never decipher these things.

I think I made a mistake. The receipt email says what I quoted above, but the website shows this:

Well, the YQ is still the same.

Nor sure why some of the other numbers don't match up though.

Any idea what 527.00G332.60BP is? The numbers seem quite high (way more than I was charged). BP looks like a Korea departure tax, but the number seems high.
