Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

It would be worth an extra stopover to fly SEA-SFO-TPE-HKG instead of SEA-TPE-HKG so you get the dramatically superior Royal Laurel business class.

Cheers

Yes, I understand. I read about the SFO-TPE flight by EVA.
That itinerary only had 1 biz class award seat left when I checked for my dates.
And we chose this because of the timing of landing this itinerary allows us in HKG.

Also, we are not business class travelers. This is our first biz class trip. So, we are definitely excited about that.

Booked for Feb 2015:
2 J seats all segments
One way: YYZ-IST-DAR (TK)- JNB (SAA) 150,000 pts + $123.72
One Way: CPT-JNB-HKG (SAA)-TPE-YYZ (EVA) 150,000 pts. + $172.00
Total for 2: 300,000 + $295.72

Dates were fixed so went with long way home - will try and watch and see if better comes up back over the Atlantic without much YQ

YYZ-LAX-HNL (United)
HNL-ORD (United) ORD-YYZ (AC)

$168 in fees

All UA segments would have been $113 but the routing was to nasty.

Another examples of made up taxes by Air Canada.
USD73.90 is the total charge for a 4-segment itinerary from YYZ-HNL in true taxes.

Its amazing that they can get away with stealing ~$30 on these tickets (on top of the YQ scam!)

Well I may have the most dubious honour the most expensive "free" ticket ever booked... Hoping the up charge going from J to F is not too brutal at T-14 for my LH leg.

YVR-FRA (LH J - change to F at T-14)
FRA-CDG (LH J)
CDG-NRT (NH F)
HND-BKK (TG F)
BKK-SIN (TG J)
SIN-ICN (OZ J)
ICN-LAX (OZ F) new A380!
LAX-YVR (AC Y, hopefully J opens)

$1498. Ouch. I'm going to make it my mission to eat and drink $1500 worth of champagne and caviar to make it worthwhile...

Nice itinerary. NH F and OZ F on A380 - nice! But painful...

Nice itinerary though! I'm a novice here - how many AE miles? I'd love to replicate one day.
