Can only imagine the teasing he gets.
Nickname among the crews: Tailstrike.

AC42 YYZ-DEL turned around midflight

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/ACA42

YYZ-DEL turned around halfway over Europe, presumably due to PK airspace closure en route?

Not an expert, but it looks like they did a full 360 somewhere over Norway?

Why not divert to anywhere in Europe and refuel? I guess crew would time out?

Presumably not just airspace but also not clear whether will escalate. A number of other flights / returned cancelled from / to EU today

Interestingly, UA82, EWR-DEL, which pretty much follows the same routing, did not return, but diverted to LHR
EWR-BOM, diverted to FRA.

Interesting, I thought this flight normally went over the pole, this flight seems a lot more 'straight' than normal. It's been fixed now, it didn't do another turn over Norway.

It looks like they were pretty much half way so enough fuel to return all the way to snowmageddon, perhaps not the case with the UA one. I guess not dumping pax into a country in Europe where they could end up being liable to cover hotels is better for AC. Although perhaps this is an extraordinary circumstance. Just like weather.

I'd love to have been a fly on the cockpit wall when that message was received.

AC ops: "Stop now. Turn around. Come back to YYZ"
Pilot: "Whisky Tango Foxtrot ?!?"

I'm sure UA's first choice for diversion was YYR

Plus visa issues - presumably a number of people on board a route like this wouldn't have had EU/UK visas.

Not the first time that acronym has been used in association with cockpits in this merged thread

That's a good point. I always wonder if airlines consider this, I'm 99% sure the airline that tried routing me through the US to get back to Canada neglected to check if I had legal ability to transit the US.

Still it sounds like UA just dumped 500 people into Europe. And in extraordinary circumstances airlines can land pretty much anywhere. Like all those YYR planes ~17 years ago. I'm assuming UA would have had to do something with those pax until they could fly them back TATL.
