Question Regarding Load Factors

I booked a combined UA/AC itinerary on Orbitz. The reason why I booked it on Orbitz instead of AC or UA is because it was the only way that I could get a US Dividend Miles mileage-qualifying fare on the AC leg.

I selected a seat on Orbitz, but in pulling up my itinerary on-line, it appears as if the seat did not go through. I tried to "change" it on-line, but the message I get is that the seat will be assigned at check-in time. I also called AC and got the same answer.

My question to you Aeroplan elites is this:

Can you tell how many seats appear to be open on AC 775 (YUL-LAX) on September 6? The Orbitz seat map is showing a few entirely empty rows, but I presume that I cannot see some available blocked off seats. I am trying to gauge my chances of (hopefully not!) getting IDB'd. I must get home that night because I leave on another trip on September 7. I do plan to get to the airport very early, in the hopes that they will release an exit row seat to me, since I am *G. I have had good luck with AC doing this, but I have never arrived at the ticket counter without a seat before!

Also, is it possible to do on-line check-in on AC as a U.S. citizen? I last flew AC a year ago, and I cannot remember if I was able to web check-in or not. If so, will AC allow me to select a seat?

You can do a dummy booking on ac.com, click on latitude, then click the seat map... It'll show what's available. Online check in will also work as a US citizen. You will need to enter your passport info, etc online. And yes you should be able to pick a seat then. It'd be like flying Tango without booking a seat.

Thanks. It looks like only 13 seats are left, unless they have blocked off the exit row seats and not indicated them as being blocked off.

At least I can do on-line check-in!!!

Rows 16, 17, 27, 28 are blocked from advance seat assignment on an A319. 29ABC are crew rest seats and are given out only if Y is full.

You cannot really gauge the loads on a flight based on seat assignments for various reasons, such as Tango passengers don't have advanced seat assignment so you might see 20 empty seats, but that doesn't mean the flight isn't booked at 99%.

But as you suggest, you can do web check in (even as US citizen).
