Changing part of a ticket

I'm booked to fly YYZ-YVR-HNL. I need to change the YVR-YYZ portion on my return.

I'm currently booked in "C" class and there are no other C seats on the HNL-YVR flight. When I try to change my booking, I cannot just change the YVR-YYZ portion since it is a 'through' ticket. Since there are no other C seats on the HNL-YVR flight, if I change, I get stuck in Y. A phone call to AC didn't help. I'm happy (well, willing) to pay a surcharge for breaking up the through ticket, I just don't want to lose my C seat on the HNL-YVR flight. Is there anyway to do this?

Do it when you get to YVR - it shouldn't be a problem as there is generally lots of C and such frequent flights YVR-YYZ... if res has a problem it should be easier to change then.

The problem however might end up being that you're allowed maximum connection time of 4 hours since I don't think t-border qualifies as an international flight, and thus it breaks the pricing and becomes a YVR-YYZ fare pricing.

However, in practice, I've found that agents have generally been flexible to change beyond maximum allowable connection time at airport or rarely on the phone...

Depending which C fare basis you're on, some of the C fares for YYZ-HNL allows unlimited free stopovers. You can simply call AC up and have them look at your fare to see if it permits stopovers, if so, you won't have problems changing YVR-YYZ to another date if there's availability while keeping HNL-YVR on the current date.
