AC Flight Map while in flight

The last time I flew AC the flight map was not working.
If they are still deciding what program to use... the Air New Zealand flight map is really amazing!... see below

I flew the brand new 77W to Tokyo last week, flight map " not available"

Simon Jul 22, 2007 7:46 am

It doesn't work on any of the XMed / new equipment.

Incidentally, I don't know why they bothered with this new Thales VOD business. There are usually 3, count 'em, 3 "Hollywood" movies on offer.

Yippee.

Three?! That's 50% more than I've been getting recently. It's been discussed to death on here, but the content on the VOD hasn't been refreshed ('cept movies) in ages.

FWIW, I had a seemingly knowledgable in charge tell me there are no plans to implement the in flight map on the IFE.

Shareholder Jul 22, 2007 9:26 am

It is pathetic but there must be a problem with the company AC contracts for its content. I have sent several of my TV productions that I certainly feel are as good or better than recent offerings to them for consideration and have heard nothing back, even after follow-up calls. This even when AC is making such a big to-do about its student film festival!

Once more whoever is in charge of this aspect of inflight just doesn't get it, or doesn't care about the inflight custmer experience!

Same here - not even a nice PFO letter...

However - the total opposite with Arjun at En Route. Always a quick reply and they even used my 1939 Trans Canada Airlines timetable and map in the April 2007 issue. There will very likely be more to come out of my collection.

Yes, IMO their air show is the best I have seen. The 3-D and colours are just fascinating! ^

Simon Jul 22, 2007 11:41 am

Ah, but there's "not changing it frequently" and there's "paucity of offerings".

If they had 50 movies and only changed it once every few months, it would be a big difference to having 3 movies and not changing it very often. Especially given it is that dumb movie with the two male figure skaters and a couple of others.

The ANZ map also makes you realize just how far you have really travelled.

The only thing I don't like about the ANZ system is I always hit the remote (in PE) when moving around, always a PITA. I love the touch screen for that

You can avoid hitting the remote accidentally if you just put it away and flip the mount over, no?

Scott218 Jul 23, 2007 4:25 am

ANA uses the same system. It's definitely an upgrade to the old maps.

I actually didn't like the SQ maps as much as the ANA/NZ ones.

samcmontreal Jul 23, 2007 6:01 am

none of the new AVOD's have working maps even on international flights.. i just did Ac033/034 yesterday on the 767-300 with the new lie flat seats..and on 034 the AVOD did not even work nevermind the map.... they tried to fix it in HNL but it stopped working as soon as they took off.. so far they offered us 10K miles but I was hoping for more.

AC681 Jul 23, 2007 7:31 am

I wonder if the recent purchase of Aliance Atlantas has had anything to do with it? Most of the TV Shows a few months ago started with "Heres A taste of programing from...Food TV...HGTV etc. All of which were Aliance Atlantas.

The NZ ones are definately more creative and more advanced than SQ's, CX's, and a handful of others as well.

Another beauty of theirs, is showing the globe map and where it is currently daylight and where it is currently in dark. Very fascinating. ^

Global guy Jul 23, 2007 2:23 pm

SAA also uses a similar map/graphics on the 345. There is also a camera option showing forward views from the tail fin. Really cool at approach and landing. ^

Its one thing to offer AVOD and market that but the product not even close to being a competitive one in the market. Maybe AC is planning to implement a pay per use system on the AVOD to nickle and dime us more.

I can't wait for the day that all the 763's are complete. What a poorly planned project

Seat14K Jul 23, 2007 10:05 pm

Not sure if XM was poorly Planned

But it sure has been poorly executed.

Agree - they don't seem to be making much use of the new system they've gone to such efforts to install. (This is based on a very superficial inspection since I never really use IFE anyway. Needless to say, the map was the one IFE feature I used to find mildly interesting.:()

And speaking very loosely of inflight video stuff, is anyone else distressed by the smarmy 'information' video they've taken to shewing before landing at YYZ ? Even the first time round it's annoying as hell - I would really rather be collecting my thoughts while looking unmolested out the window than being interrupted by the GTAA droning on and on in self-congratulation. After you've heard it about 6 times it's completely insufferable. And oddly enough, it contains no explanation of why landing at YYZ almost always means sitting on the apron in front of the gate for 15 minutes waiting for the ground crew to turn up.  </digressive rantings>

AC681 Jul 27, 2007 7:17 pm

Sorry To bring up an old thread, however have just found out that the map feature is being installed on the Thales IFE System. One of the the Jazz CRJ705s has had the new software installed and working.

That is good news!!! Hopefully AC will be able to implement it fast on all other planes having the Thales IFE system.

What about the map? better or same as now?

AndDee Aug 12, 2007 9:35 pm

Any update to this on the 777 ?

That information is completely false. The flight map is supposed to be uploaded in an upcoming software update.

So will the update mean more movies ? more shows ? more music etc, 150 hours of audio and video is pretty lean when compared to most other carriers around the world

AC681 Aug 13, 2007 12:26 am

Was onboard a Jazz CRJ705 thursday night (Fin 710) that had the map installed and working.

I flew on a 705 a few days ago with an operational map. Some reviews about the maps have not been good. I however found the maps informative.

The challenge that I encountered is that I could not get out of the program to return to other features.

I needed the sleep anyway as it was a very early morning flight....and so I gave up and closed my eyes.

PS. I did note a larger choice of about six Hollywood movies.

Al B Sep 8, 2007 4:59 pm

I had a CR7 from YWG-YYC 2 weeks ago and the map was working - better than a lot of models currently offered by other carriers, but not as good as a handful of others as discussed already.
The annoyance factor was the TV channels weren't labelled/headed with their genre (unlike the A320 family AVODS) so one had to push "Channel 1" or "Channel 7" etc to actually get into the menu before finding out what particular genre shows that Channel was offering. A lot of extra finger tapping for no necessary reason.

I did YEG-YVR on Aug 26 on E170. Map was not working then.

The map is being trialed on the CR7s. It is not yet being used on other aircraft types with AVOD.

I am sure it's not that hard to get the map working, geez how many other airlines have moving maps ?

Any ETA as to when the maps will be on the 777's ?

Scott218 Sep 9, 2007 8:10 am

How does the new maps compared to the old ones?
It would be nice if someone puts a youtube link on the features.

Judging by how long it's taking to get the map implemented one would say it would hope to be the best product out there! I doubt that will be the case

One of the best maps is Air NZ in my opinion

It's not the map per se, it's includedin a software upgrade to the Thalis system. The upgrade has to be tested before it is applied system wide. That's the case with each significant change in the system. There are more upgrades coming and I assume they will all be trialed for a few weeks before they are installed in the entire system. For example, the system will soon offer games. I don't believe they will throw offer them system wide without a limited trial.
