missing luggage valuation

I had my luggage shall we say missing from an AC flight...several items valued at close to $800 were missing..

After all the paper work, I get a cheque from AC for less than $300 and the recommendation to claim the difference on my own insurance.

Is this a legitimate offer? Frankly I do not think it is! What are my alternatives.

To add insult to this injury, my bags were delays again by over 24 hrs last week. Nothing missing this time but the delay was considerable. And the bag was so damaged that I had to buy a new one yesterday at a cost of $160C.

What to do about this....all advice appreciated.

On two of my last flights I had my (2006) SE bag-tags ripped in half. Yes, the -plastic- things. Quite impressive. Somehow the bags weren't damaged too. Anyway, I would think that a frequent flier would grow to expect at least some damage over time. I never put anything of value or breakable in my bags. Really, that's what insurance is for though... You should go through them, not the airline. Take photos, get a report from the airline, and then deal with it through insurance.

It depends. Normally, the 'payout amount' is calculated as [the original purchase value] - [depreciation]. Without knowing the details of your claim (and the routing on your ticket), no one can really properly answer your question ...

Have you filed a [new] claim?

I certainly intend to file a new claim as my bag was destroyed on this last long haul flight.....it is beyond repair and I know AC will insist I take it in for repair which is a waste of my time.

I had to buy a new one yesterday as I am flying this week to Europe.

I find a bag only last a little over a year...frankly this should not be the case but sadly it is from my experience.

Had checked 3 pieces of luggage at LAX and none arrived at GRU. Got two of the three the following day delivered to GIG. Still after a week the one that contained all of my clothes hasn't turned up. I believe that it is still at YYZ.

Having flown way too much in my life I have had few times my luggage delayed by a day or two but nothing like this.

We'll see how AC will handle my claim that I will file later. I have travel insurance that covers checked in luggage up to $2000.
