The codeshare partner may decide not to take capacity on some/many routes so as not to spread itself thin. AC, I presume, wants to funnel as much business as possible to partners through LHR and FRA and even MUC because it serves those airports from multiple places in Canada. If LX does something unique that LH doesn't, that would make sense for AC to codeshare, but it would not necessarily make sense to commit to LX capacity to Moscow, for example, if it has adequate capacity available on LH or SK.

Yes, AC codeshares with LX on ZRH-BOM. I believe AC also codeshares with LX on ZRH-ATH, BKK, FRA, GVA, LHR, MXP, YUL, and VCE.

:)

AC has no codeshare deals with JP, US and SAA. I'm not sure if there is anything with Blue1 and cannot remember if they have a deal with JK (they probably do).

>Having to check-in at a different desk, or even terminal

Around 2000 I was scheduled to fly home to YVR out of DFW. The flight was an Air Canada flight number on Canadian Airlines metal (AC had acquired CP) operated out of the Delta gates.

There were about a ten of us on the shuttle van bound for the flight, and when it go to the Delta terminal I hopped out. My colleague, trusting me hopped out too. Everyone else said I was nuts (including the van driver) and they trundled on to the Air Canada terminal.

Fast forward an hour - They're about to close the door on the plane and who should appear in the aisle desperately looking for bin space but the 8 flustered sweaty exhausted pax from the van. They'd just sprinted from the AC terminal after being to told to report to Delta. None of them looked me in the eye.

Until code shares are truly seamless (check in at either airline and everything's identical) then I say get rid of 'em.

They can benefit the traveller greatly.

For example, just tonight I was able to book a certain US major gateway city to a certain Asian major gateway city, and onward to a certain major SE Asian city, all in paid J on the operating carrier and booked under an AC flight number and ticket stock, for a steal of a deal.

This fare would normally not be available on the operating carrier but for the vagaries of codesharing and, yes, I do believe I was the beneficiary of it. (PM me for details if you'd like to know more...)
