OT: Dialing local with the Area code
In YOW now one must dial the area code+number to make a local call.
Where else in canada does one have to do this? I find it very annoying! Anyone else in YOW feel the same? |
Hey - this has been a Toronto thing for several years - there is an another area code within the 416 - 647. This is the result of all the cell phones needing numbers. Could it be that there are a lot of cell phones in Ottawa?
|
10-digit dialing arrived in Montreal/Laval (514 & 450) a few years back.

Slight OT... Los Angeles tried overlaying area codes once, but the plan was scrapped after so many complaints. California continues to split areas up.

In the NYC area, Tampa bay area and many other major metropolitan areas this is the case. On cell phones you have had to dial the area code for years so I say get used to it! |

This has been the case in the GTA for several years. This month it has been applied to Montreal/Laval (514/450), Ottawa/Gatineau (613/819), and London/Southwestern Ontario (519).
An additional area code will be added to Montreal (438) and Southwestern Ontario (226). 7-digit calls will only be completed for a few more months after which 10-digit dialling will become mandatory. |

I don't know why they didn't switch to 8-digit phone numbers (like France) rather than overlapping area codes.
Eixting numbers could have just had a digit added to the end and we'd get 10 times the number of lines. |
Yes YVR also requires the area code when you dial a local number...
|
We started in 519 the same as the others in the last week or so. Not sure why they didn't just split the area code either, but we'll get used to it. It will be weird in a few months when new cell phones have a different area code than the home phone LOL.

Have any of you people gone through the troubles and costs of changing your companies telephone numbers???
|
I re-programmed my company issued cell phone while sitting at Timmy's a few weeks ago LOL.
But yeah, I can imagine what time consuming pain it would be, never mind the cost of lost productivity, to have to re-program a large office. Most of the speed dials in our office already had area codes in them, so we were lucky. |
We were able to reprogram our phone system to add a 514 if only 7 digits were dialed. To acces 450 or the new 438 overlay we will have to dial 10 digits. Several cell phone are able to prefix an area code as well.
