Dress code in lounges

I'm no dress fanatic with my dockers as favorite daily wear but the crap I've just seen in the yeg lounge is appalling. I'm now in favour of some dress code. At least clean clothes and a shower should be pre requisites

My travel is either for business or pleasure.

If I am travelling for business, I don't know who I'll meet or when I'll meet them, so I want to be presentable and will be dressed as such.

If I am travelling for pleasure by air, I am going somewhere far from home, perhaps even to another country. While I am away I represent the image of my home or my country, so I will want to be presentable and will be dressed as such throughout my visit.

If I need exercise clothing, I'll pack it for when I actually exercise, which is unlikely to happen in the MLL.

If my dress habits happen to increase someone else's enjoyment of air travel, that's great. If they are inspired to emulate, that's great too. I'm all for everyone looking as fabulous as possible at all times. But leading by example is as far as I'll go on this. Making a rule about it would be pointless.

I am all for the shower part... but how to enforce it?

Maybe at security we can install snif detectors. ;)

I have worn shorts and a T-shirt inside the MLL many times. Usually it is because I am going somewhere warm, like HNL, when only taking a backpack there, I do not see the point in wearing pants, they're not needed. Although I do not always wear a collar shirt when travelling, I don't believe that my dress is inappropriate. I wear what is comfortable for me.

I have some great memories walking through MIA airport in a sandy bathing suit right from the beach and then kicking back in the UA red carpet club (they actually had free beer and food at that one).

I definitely wasn't the only one doing so.

hey so do I  , but I still like the idea of showering in the MLL or another lounge when I have time to kill.

I'm with you on this. Some of the stuff I've seen in YYZ has been ridiculous. I think some people's attire in there at times is crap. I have no problem with casual but people should have some self-respect and respect for others using the lounge.

On a somewhat related note, I just don't understand the awful clothes and presentation that are now commonplace in most workplaces. The MLLs are probably no worse than many offices. It's not that I have a problem with casual dress; rather with the complete disregard for style and grooming that is becoming the norm.

PS: Personally I wouldn't be caught dead in dockers... ;)

The AC link below makes no mention of a dress code for the MLL

http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelin.../maplelounges/

However the CIBC Aerogold does make some mention ;http://www.aerogoldtravelclub.com/legal.asp

From the link: "While lounges are not subject to formal dress, proper attire is respectfully requested"

The challenge is to define "proper attire" Ask ten people at the Winnipeg corner of "Portage and Main" and you will perhaps get ten definitions of proper attire.

The times are indeed changing and what was formerly considered improper dress for certains locales is now acceptable.

Do I agree with this laissez-faire in dress? No

....but it is difficult to enforce a dress code unless you state clearly the dress code and expectations. And AC has not done that for pax. AC employees travelling on passes do have to abide by a dress code.

That made me snicker.

When I travel on a scheduled airline (most of the time AC), regardless of destination and class or service, I always wear collar shirt and long pants.

I know that I will be visiting a lounge and may (or may not) be upgraded,
and that is the minimum dress code to be expected.

Last year I travelled in J sevral times between YUL and FRA/MUC. What I saw was quite appalling. So many pax were dressed like they were about to go chopping wood in their back yard. Also, they showed little respect for the others and the cabin furnishings - throwing their garbage all over, putting feet up against the wall or other seats, and being loud.

The same goes foir the MLLs and on top of that, people talk loudly on cell phones.

Yes, it is time to start enforcing dress code!

(For the record: I invariably travel in jeans and long sleeved shirts.)

But for god's sake, who cares? Let people do what they like, it does not hurt you if they travel in shorts. Their problem, period.

As for the shower part, sure. Mind you, that's even worse in other parts of the world.

A couple of days ago, on an SK flight from OSL to FRA, two guys (father and so I think) came and sat in the A and B seats in my row, next to me in C. Good that the other side of the aisle stayed empty so I moved to D, and the father moved to C. After a while, I could not help noticing an unpleasant smell. Sure enough, the guy had taken off his shoes.

But otherwise, for all I care, he could have been naked. Who cares, why would I want to dictate what people see their life as.

Of course, smoking is again a different matter. Or speaking loudly in cell phones.

anti_ice Mar 16, 2006 3:35 pm

Does this mean I have to stop walking from the MLL shower to my seat in a towel?

patty canuck Mar 16, 2006 3:45 pm

I don't mind what people wear in the MLL ... as long as I get one of the main things that I use for when going to the lounge ... PEACE AND QUIET ... then people can wear what they want.

It is easier to close your eyes than block out sound from your ears (eg. people chatting on their cell phones out like everyone has to know their business).
