Notice: WestJet Threads

With the recent announcement that WestJet will soon offer their own perks for passengers (ie. frequent flyer scheme) it now makes sense to start archiving threads and posts about this airline in its own forum so that when their won program is formally announced, members and passengers can look forward to a whole history of information about the airline and the choices its passengers have.

Over the next few days, we will be manually moving threads that seem categorized for WestJet into this new forum and ask that members adopt their posting practices to post future stories, news items and information pertaining to the airline and its future frequent flyer program in that forum. Simply as a placeholder we will use the term "Passenger Perks" to reflect their future program and will update that information once the true name is known.

Now, since the Air Canada forum is fairly Canadiana to this point, we'll keep the WestJet forum as a sub-set until it's move into the normal roster of program listing in the future once they formally launch the program. This is not a reflection of WestJet as part of Air Canada, but trying to be member friendly since the topic is close to all things Canadian in the AC forum. Thanks for your support of this forum and good luck to the success of the WestJet forum which may as well establish its own sort of identity. Much like the friendly rivalry of the hockey teams in Canada, let;s continue to show respect in the rivalry among the passengers of these two airlines.

Again, thank you.

Hopefully once WS obtains it's own forum, there will be fewer cases of Westjetters stirring the pot on the AC forum simply to stir things up. I hope in the meantime the ongoing war hasn't opened on a second front with the creation of this subforum. That doesn't mean the attempt to make things better isn't appreciate by this AC forum poster, however, Randy.

How about like the WWE, we hold a draft and decide who to send over to "Smackdown"? Who would be the first pick? PE or Girard? :D

Wow... WestJet finally gets its own forum.

I applaud the move. ^

Me too. ^

I really like the way that you have done this Randy ^ Keeping it in the AC forum does make it easier to bounce between.

Coming of age, eh. I guess J class should be next. If only to give AC a hard time.

:D

Ditto! ^

Hey people, let's not forget about Canjet SmartRewards, either! Arguably Canada's only true frequent flyer program - you take six flights, and get one free. :D (Double SmartRewards for flights this January).

Now all we need is a sticky to contain all the UA BS and we can get back to enjoying FT as it was. ^

Westjet "Airmiles" and Canjet Smart Rewards

How about a forum called Westjet "Airmiles" and Canjet Smart Rewards???

1) Westjet has not Formally stated that they will have a Frequent Flyer program. The company currently uses Airmiles as their incentive system. We should consider the possibilities that any furture FFP initiatives could align with an existing program (e.g. earn and burn AA/CX/BA points) rather than develop their own system. Developing a FFP is technology intensive and Westjet's strategic goal for 2006 is the new CRS project, not an FFP.

The Canuck FT community needs to prepare itself for the possibility that Westjet's FFP initiatives could be completely innovative and not like any traditional program.

2) Westjet is of similar size to Frontier, Independence, and Jetblue. These forums are active enough warrant continued separate forum status. I would think that a Westjet/Canjet forum would be equally or greater in activity. It is on this reason I agree with RP and the above posters that a Separate Forum is required.

3) A separate forum could attract a Westjet lurker with enough management status to mirror Ben Smith. This separate forum could become a barometer for Westjet's initiatives to introduce perks. The airline is spending big bucks on customer serveys and opinion groups (like the Air Travel Advisory Panel). The FT community could become a better and cheaper method for Westjet to work with the Frequent Flying community.

Let's just get all the WestJet junk off the AC board asap! Then take all the UA junk off too!

WestJet's FF Program is AIR MILES

Randy, unless you know from your own connections that WestJet will start a more traditional FF program, there is no evidence that this is about to happen. WestJet's FF program has been its affiliate with AIR MILES. One earns AM miles when booking WS, and can get cheaper award redemptions on WS when an AM Gold or hold a WestJet BMO Gold Mastercard.

The original thread posted the other day was irroneous in its titling as the newspaper article made absolutely no reference to WS changing from AIR MILES to a more traditional form of FF program. The Oneworld link, if it happens as part of the alliance, is for flight connections and does not mean any FF program is likely or needed. A true FF program would be a costly innovation for WestJet, and since its own lurkers here say a CX link is not going to happen until the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2006, I think you are premature in dedicating a FF forum, or sub-forum, to WestJet.

I have asked others to post the exact reference in the article that indicates WestJet will get a true FF program, and this has yet to happen.

I suppose this will placate those who have grown uncomfortable with seeing WS threads, but it also puts we AIR MILES collectors at a disadvantage when wanting to post threads about that program.

However, it is your BB and if you think an airline without a traditional FF program rates a forum, or sub-forum, so be it. And does anyone else find it ironic that the WS sub-forum shows up ahead of the AC threads?

Sorry to disappoint you but I actually fly CO/NW way more than WestJet. Heck I even flew AC in J this week to LAX.

As to the decision to do this, I disagree with it since most threads on WestJet start out as informational until the Apologists attack. :td:
