An unpainted airplane requires some additional maintenance. It is not a free ride and that is why this was not considered in the past.

The surface of the skin must be kept smooth and therefore an unpainted airplane needs to be polished more often.

Is not only the paint.. But no need for that many people to paint the planes either.

So less weight and less employees
