AC has always used the rights of intermediate pick-up [is this Third Freedom or Fourth Freedom?] within its license to fly between Canada and India. When it first started such flights -- back in the 80s to BOM -- it flew via LHR, then BOM and onward to SIN. Using a L1011 AC could and did pick up originating passengers at all points. This new routing via ZUR is similar.
AC -- and lots of airlines -- have such rights. AC has fewer of these onward flights to third countries than it used to, as loads have built to sustain dedicated route loads. Canada-Brazil was like this, first using the Brazil stop, at Sao Paulo [or Rio in early CP days], where it picked up local passengers to fly between that city and EZE. Today it uses this approach to keep the EZE and SCL service filled. [One of the better upgrade deals is between EZE and SCL, where for less than C$200 all in return you can get a H-class, SWU upgradeable seat and have a nice lunch between the two cities... And many of us enjoyed the cheap fares/packages AC used to have between LHR and Nice when it flew that extra leg on one of its LHR 4x flights.
Curious it doesn't permit booking properly on the website, but I am sure Andrew will get this bug sorted out.
