Bait & Switch on AC.com

Booking a flight from YYZ-BOS early June. Selecting Tango+ gives a return fare of about $350. Go all the way through the screens, hit "Purchase". Get a message "The fare has increased" (to $450 or so). Go back, pick a different outbound time (with the same T+ fare), same thing. Anybody encountered this? Is it so difficult to build an inventory management system that is accurate? Left it for an hour, tried again. Same result. Note that the screen listing all the various fares still shows the individual T+ fares as available for the relevant flights, and your total price still reflects them then adds the taxes, it's just that you can't actually buy a ticket at those prices. Grrrrrrr.

Hmm, not getting the same problem, it's coming out to $450 (incl tax). The only way I could get a cheaper flight was to connect through YUL

rt Wednesday June 8th at 6:30 AC355

I got all the way to entering a credit card number and didn't get the message you're getting. Weird...

Check and see if you are Purchase in Canada Mode.
You may be in USA Mode. Which will Quote in USD. and When you go to Purchase it is converted to Canadian Dollars, because Outbound is in YYZ.
USD. 359.00 is about C$ 452.53

On travelocity, I once booked a rental car, everything fine, I give my CC, confirm. Then at the end, the confirmation screen had a different rate. Good thing I noticed too.

I had to phone them to cancel. I tried complaining about their interface, essentially to no avail. Was told repeatedly that it was not their fault, but of the underlying reservation system. My point, that I am doing business with them, not whoever their suppliers may be, did not seem to take me very far...

Oh well. These days, I tend to go directly to Hertz.

Yes, you have to actually truly try to buy it - I also have my credit card number in there. You can't test it because there's no going back once you press "Purchase". Of course, what's sauce for the goose is not sauce for the gander - THEY can change the price between you pressing "Purchase" and actual sale - but if you press "Purchase" and they see fit to honour their own offered fare, then you have purchased, there's no going back. Sounds fair to me - if you're AC.

I think that's a bit of a red herring - I am in Canada, have never entered "USA mode", the pseudo-screen print I included clearly shows the fare in beaver bucks, as does the fare availability screen.

I have always encountered using their "Flexible Dates Calender" or "Dream Maps" to be a pain. I suspect over 75% of the quoted fares or dates are wrong. I can count endless times when I see a great deal and they end up to have no dates at all. Or the routing comes up to be invalid or of course the confirmation screen changing to a different rate.

Bin707 Apr 9, 2005 10:57 am

Well, waddya know. Tried again this morning, sailed all the way through and got the $350 fare. Moral - if at first........ :)
