B727 or DC-9 more than likely. Don't think there would have been DC-8 demand on that route, and definitely not the 767/747/L1011.
Not really anything else in the AC fleet that could have made it. My first flight = AC B727 YQR-YYZ-YUL and back in around 1982/83 or so. |
First aircraft I flew in was a Canadian Airforce B707 - as a wee tyke on my parents lap 1970 from Ottawa to Vancouver. First commercial aircraft I remember taking was a B747 operated by Canadian Pacifc from Vancouver to Toronto in 1979. I suppose I don't really 'remember' it as such, more recall that the parental units had taken a photograph of me in front of a window at the departure gate with the aircraft in the background.
Best flight ever - Sitting in the cockpit jump seat of an Airforce B707, just behind the pilot from takeoff in Edmonton (Namao?) to landing at YVR. This was just before they were retired in favour of the Airbus so must have been early 80s (for some reason, I can't remember the year). cheers, MWAC |

At the time, it was seen as a way the federal government could 'support' CP without actually outright giving them money, something that would have been unpalatable to most taxpayers. |
In fact, the last military 707 left the fleet in 93.
In late Dec 92, I flew on one of the last ones to Nairobi and returned to Trenton in late Jan 93. The other two were retired later in the year. |

A DC9 doesn't go that far, too little range. A B727 could, but I remember being on the L1011 to MIA way back when I was a kid.
RE : the B707. I was last on a CAF 707 in 92. The Airbus was broken and it took me from Ancona, Italy to Trenton. I was soooo disapointed when it showed up, but I was thrilled to be going back to Canada |
B707
I hadn't realised that the 707s flew into the 1990s, but then again I had ceased being eligible for flights when the old man retired - so probably didn't follow the fortunes of the old birds.
My admittedly youthful impression was that in the 70s it seemed a bit easier for the parental units to secure priority 5 seats cross country to visit the grand parental units. In the 80's (dad retired in 86 - so no 'flips' after that) it seemed a bit more difficult to obtain priority 5 seats. Impression only - not really sure if regs were tightened up or not. Nonetheless I remember the meals on those airforce flights were pretty good. Departed Halifax for Ottawa on one flight and was served dishes of fresh Nova Scotia blueberries after the main meal. Worst 'flip' I was ever on was a Herc from Greenwood to Trenton - can't count how many hours that was sitting on the red webbing with ear defenders on - some time in 1980 I think. cheers, MWAC. |
My dad was based in Lahr, West Germany, from about 4 months after I was born in 1969, until 1973. I made 2 round trips on White Knuckle Airlines before my 4th birthday LOL.
My first AC flight that I know of was in 1978-ish, DC-9 from Fredericton to Toronto. Memorable in that I got to sit in the co-pilot's seat, and they actually let me beleive I turned the plane LOL. As for the topic at hand, I know my aunt and uncle went to Cuba on a DC-8 in the late 70's/early 80's. Who knows what they used by the middle of the 80's though. |
