Oh I called the SE desk and asked of a P can use a SSWU she said yes...
I guess I am not the only person who does not know the rules. ;) Oh well I guess its one more reason not to create so many rules... |

Why Fly,
If you friend flown 18K in Dec 2004, the Prestige status may not take effect until March 1, 2005 and he should not have had any 2004 upgrade certs since he does not have the status to use any of them. |
The bullsheet factor is getting pretty high in this thread!

No kidding LE! Especially when it turns out that a security guard was not ever involved and the agent was clearly explaining the rules (and as stated in the email, in an empathetic way).

My response in terms of transferability:
I believe the certificates are not transferable (although I do not have the certificates in front of me to indicate the exact wording on that matter). However, I have (and I am sure many others on this forum have) recently given my surplus 2004 SWU certificates (expiring at the end of this month) to several different (ie in YOW, YYZ, and YVR) concierges - who might give them to eligible passengers, in need of extra certificates. If the certificates are truly non-transferable (notwithstanding what the wording states on the certificate in terms of this point), and if Air Canada's personnel are supposed to follow this exact rule, then they should not have accepted the certificates, to be potentially forwarded on to other customers/passengers? |

PS I have given certs to AC employees also...... Oh well this is flogging a dead horse... I stand corrected and won't be giving certs out... PS I gave away over 40 certs... 14 SSWU [in the last 4 months] and only 1 was a problem. |
Why is this such a complicated issue?
Quote from a 2004 Air Canada System-Wide Upgrade Certificate: "Transferability Certificates can be used by a Super Elite, Elite or Presige member OR one companion travelling with the member on the same flight (even if the member has purchased a ticket in Executive Class/Executive First)." Quote from a 2004 Air Canada Special System-Wide Upgrade Certificate: "Transferability Certificates can be used by a Super Elite or Elite member OR one companion travelling with the member on the same flight (even if the member has purchased a ticket in Executive Class/Executive First)." THEREFORE, they ARE transferable to ANY person with the correct status at the time of use. Now, in terms of giving them to a non-status person to use by themselves, well it's not transferable to them according to above said rule(s). That's pretty simple, IMHO. No rocket science here. Now having security confiscate the cert because of this violation is a little overboard, that is, if whyfly's story has not been exaggerated. In addition to "transferability", how is this different from giving them to an agent and having that agent upgrade some lucky person? That's a double transfer, and the agent has not status... if you want to get anal! |

Because of a threshold bonus, I'm the proud owner of two SWU's for 2005/06, but my Elite status runs out at the end of the month, when I assume i'll become the proud owner of an orange card... ... |
Surprised!
My husband is an elite Aeroplan member but I usually use all of his points. He travels quite a bit for business and usually meets me wherever we are vacationing. It's funny that there was so much hassle given to this poor guy considering last time I travelled myself with a girlfriend of mine (neither one of us status) booked through aeroplan we got upgraded and priority for our luggage. They treated me as though I was status which made me feel pretty good.
Also, I used Hilton Honors points for the hotel I stayed at (using his points yet again) and they upgraded me to a nice suite and included breakfast because he is a diamond member. Funny how he didn't travel with me but I got all the benefits as though he was with me. I bet there is much more to the original story. And yes, my husband absolutely rocks! :) |

Having said that, I see many complaints on these forums about the overcrowding in the lounges, caused a lot by bogus lounge certs. Also, if you are an E or S/E who is trying to U/g and gets bumped by someone who has used up their quota for the year, but is getting extras coupons thru CC or whatever, don't you think you are shooting yourself in the foot by contributing to coupon exchanges? Don't Shoot Me! Just Wondering |
