marked certs?

I was on a flight last year (summer 2004) SFO YYZ that required a 2004 SSWU (expires Feb 28, 2005... I was already confirmed in C from a L fare). The flight was evenutally canceled and I was placed on a later flight and ended up with a ML*1 since it was now overbooked (due to the overflow from my canceled flight). I got my SSWU back but it had already been marked as "USED SFO" along with some other scribble by the agent. It's been sitting in my drawer for 6 months now... can I still use it? Can I still use it for another flight instead of out of SFO? Never thought of it until now as I just found it as I was cleaning...

You mean to say you have a home and furniture.... ;) With all your travels, I'm surprised you know how to find your home :p

Yeah, my place looks like a warzone (mail and other stuff piling up everywhere) but I took a couple of days off to stay at home before my HNL trip this weekend :p

I thought by the tread title you meant something more like marked bills and wondered where you'd gotten your cert.'s. :D

I had a flight in August 2004 where I was using NA certs on a YYZ/YVR trip with my wife. They had written on 3 of them when we noted I required 4 certs and only had 3.I had extra SWU certs with me .She scribbled over the used portion on my NA cert and took my SWU cert. She commented that I would/should have no problem using the NA cert in future.Explain my experience and I will be OK.
Handed that particular cert in on a YQT/YYZ flight and had no questions asked, and received the U/G ^

Thanks... did your marked certs have the airport 3-letter code or any flight numbers? Mine have "USED SFO TPAC" (?) and has a flight number on it.

It will be up to the gate agent. Usually when it's marked as "USED", they are not supposed to take it.

Thanks, Empress.
Frig... that sucks. Technically, wouldn't that be a wasted SSWU since I got a ML*1 instead of confirmed C on my rebooked flight? Although it is up to the GA, would I still have a valid argument that the SSWU is still "valid"?
If no, then this is one way where a SSWU could truly go to waste!

Your argument is valid but in a span of few minutes that you have, it'll be hard to convince the GA if he/she already has their mind made up that the cert is used. They have a way of accessing past bookings to verify that but not something that can be done easily and they certainly won't do it when they're boarding a flight (which is when they'll see the cert).

*grumble*
It's for UA stock AC790 LAX YYZ next week  It will have to be done at the gate but I guess if I have time I could go to the MLL and ask for a concierge to help me out...

Besides, how can someone get a hold of marked certs anyway? I must've stolen it then if they think that they were truly used...

FWIW ... Something similar happened to me a few years ago - can't remember the exact circumstances regarding why the cert was marked as 'used' etc. but it could have been the same situation as you describe. In any event, I called the SE desk and explained the situation. They told me to send the 'used' certs back to SE AP and that they would re-issue clean certs. This is what I did and I received 'clean' ones a few days later.

My cert had written "used" and the flight number on the front of the cert. She put a wavy line over it.
Vasbyte has a good suggestion,IMO.

Ditto, on several occasions I've used "used marked" certs without a problem. It's probably happened to me a half dozen times over the years and I can only think of one case where the agent even bothered to ask me about it and they quickly took me "flight was cancelled at last second" excuse with no problems. I wouldn't sweat it too much... But I suppose if you catch the wrong person on the wrong day....

Thanks everyone. I will just try my luck at the AC gate upon arrival at LAX. If nothing works, I'll have to settle for 5 more hours of Y (heaven forbid!) :D

yyznomad Jan 9, 2005 7:33 pm

called the LAX concierge, agent said that she is making a note in my file about the marked cert and is allowing it -- if any problems then I just need to contact concierge again when I get into LAX ^
