Things to do in CPH
I'm getting out of BRU for the weekend and heading to... CPH!
So, it's my first time in Denmark and Scandinavia... What would you recommend. I arrive there Thursday night and out Sunday night. I'll be with some Danes, but I just wanted to know what specific things I should hit so I not only look a little smart, but so that I don't constantly rely on them to "plan my program"... |
A visit to the Carlsberg Brewery (for the history and architectural merits of the building of course, not the free samples of beer at the end - and we're not talking about regular Carlsberg, either...)
|
A visit to the Tuborg Brewery would be a fun thing to do. :)
(don't tell anyone but I think it is the same company as Carlsberg.....) Otherwise, the only thing that needs to be said about Copenhagen....... GIRLS!! They are stunning and speak better English than I do. Hope this helps. MCM. |

I liked visiting Roskilde for the cathedral and Helsingor for the castle. The Glypotek is a very nice art museum (and has a tropical greenhouse inside). The Resistance Museum is interesting. Just have fun strolling around in the main area of town, on and off the Stroget, through Nyhavn and Christianshavn.
I would have liked to get to the Louisiana Art Museum and another castle (name escapes me). The town of Dragor, near the airport, also sounds interesting. |
Was in CPH a few months ago for a few days ... it's a fabulous place to visit ...
I'm not that into castles etc. so spent most of my time walking the city. My highlights .... Resistance Museum Walking along the seafront/canals to the Little Mermaid, (great architecture on both sides especially the new opera house & library) Eating a herring meal on one of the many restaurants on Nyhavn A visit to Tivoli garden (especially at night) A slow walk along Stroget ... I also too a few hours and took the train accross the the new Oresund Bridge that links Denmark (Just north of Copenhagen) to Sweden (Malmo) across the Øresund Sound. The train takes about 35 minutes - Malmo has a beautiful old quarter downtown that is worth a visit. The view from the train on the crossing is not that great - would be better if you crossed by taxi but that could be a little pricey. |
Go to Kristiania, a fascinating alternative lifestyle enclave just to the east of the city centre. The houses are wacky, there are no cars, the people watching is great and weed is legal. As a social experiment it's an amazing example of Scandinavian tolerance,. and it's a fun place to hang out as well.

The Tivoli garden and Legoland in Bilund(sp) for the kid inside of you ;) !
|
Talk about serendipity-- I am off to CPH late August and then on to HEL. The ideas about CPH will be most helpful. ;)

Eat as much seafood as you can possibly digest; particularly, the tiny shrimp. The open-faced sandwiches are nothing short of miraculous!

A walk down the pedestrian street "Stroeget" from the Town Hall to Kgs Nytorv is a must. "Stroeget" can be very crowded so don´t forget detours down some of the surrounding streets: Larsbjornstraede,Fiolstraede,Graabroedre Torv, Koebmagergade just to mention a few.
Another highly recommended walk be from Kgs Nytorv, down Nyhavn, follow the harbour front past the Amalienborg (Royal castle - guard change at 12 noon), The Resistance Museum,Kastellet and on to the Little Mermaid. Further on you will come to Langelinie, where most of the cruise ships harbour. And Tivoli of course - go there at night when all the lights are on. See http://www.aok.dk/section/english, for whats up in Copenhagen. Enjoy - the weather is just great here for the time beeing. |
I really enjoyed taking the canal boat tours. I don't recall the names but your hotel should know where you can get them.
|
Alright, thanks folks! I'll look into all these suggestions.
(I was originally planning to go to Billund and to Legoland, but won't be able to make it that far. :() |

If you're travelling on SK (and not Virgin Express!) don't forget to pay a visit to the legendary Scandinavian Lounge at CPH.
If you do head out to Helsingor, and you have the time (or an interest in modern art), you could stop off at Hummlebaek (on the same road and train route) and visit the Louisiana modern art museum - really fabulous setting on the shores of the Baltic and you can wander down the lawns right to the water's edge. |
Yup, flying SK; I will definitely visit the CPH lounge. :D SK was cheaper than flying Virgin Express / SN.
|
There's a very good collection of Gaugans and the art museum, which I believe also bears the Carlsberg name. If you are looking to boost the number of countries travelled, you can take the train [from the airport] across to Malmo in Sweden, see a bit of that city, then head back to Copenhagen.
The rest of the suggestions will keep you busy for the time you're there. Do catch the elephant gate at the Carlsberg brewery, while I found Tuborg more homey. The parks are pleasant for sunbathing if the weather cooperates. |

I agree that the Resistance Museum is well worth a visit. Copenhagen's a wonderful city for strolling. Enjoy! |

I also went to Odense and the beach northeast of Odense (starts with a K) on Fyn Island. It was a nice place -- maybe someone can answer this one: Why are there TWO red men on the traffic lights? (Oh, and the trains are pretty expensive in DK.) And I agree, the food is excellent. I ate lunch at cafes off the main beaten path and it was very good. Wow, I want to go back to CPH. :D |

:D http://www.kerteminde-turist.dk/ On the traffic lights: I´m not sure this is the right explanation, but occasionally you will see TWO red men at wide crossings where there is a divider in the middle of the road where a pedestrian can wait, while cars may be given a green arrow for right turns. So one half of the pedestrian crossing might have a green man while at the same time the other half might be red . So two red men might be seen as some sort of an extra warning. Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay ! |
With just *one* free day, what should I do in Copenhagen? (I'll be spending the night Sept 3 to 4 in Roskilde, and flying back the 5th in the morning.)
|
CPH is a great city just to walk around in and explore. See if you can find a walking tour in a guidebook and just head out and enjoy the city and the people.
|
I agree. Just lose yourself in the city.

i lived in copenhagen for a year and this thread brought back so many warm fuzzy memories.
got 24 hours (or even 48) walk - stop in a cafe, have a drink, walk- get lost, stop for dinner, walk.... it`s a great city, even if you walk far in one direction, the bus system is great and you can get back to where you were with ease the danish design museum is cool and louisianna (sp) the modern art museum is great,; if you are into clubbing, nasa is very spiff, and the underground (literally) club at the tivoli gardens (it has changed its name and i dont know the new one) was and still has the neatest DJs |
