You'll always have clapping on El Al when landing in Israel. Supposedly its a 50 year old tradition something to do with the astonishment that the State of Israel actually exists and that they just landed there! They always play the same song on the PA - its a whole spiel.

You get it in J sometimes on AC when the whole crew work..:)..
Just joking... |
Ferrari, you owe me a carpet cleaning! My morning coffee is now adding a new element of colour to the lighter beige tone of the wall-to-wall...

Back in the seventies and early eighties, I did fly regularly within Brazil and occasionally between Brazil and Europe. I can't recall anyone ever clapping.
However, back in 1996, the year AC tried the YMX-BRU route and we flew it, I remember quite well lots of folks clapping. Most people on board were European tourists, from Belgium, Italy and Northern France. Never seen clapping in the US either. |
i wonder why applause is usually only heard on charter flights. the applause makes me uneasy but i'm not sure why.
incidentally, on a BOS-YUL CRJ flight a couple days ago i actually wanted to clap because it was without a doubt the softest landing i've ever experienced. i was dozing off as usual and didn't realize we had landed until the engine brakes kicked in, truly impressive. |
My experience is that school groups on flights often like to applaud on landing...
Of course, that experience was exceeded on a flight earlier this week from ORD-LGA, when the pilot pointed out the Statue of Liberty as we were on approach. A school choir on board decided spontaneously to start singing the "Star Spangled Banner" which prompted rapturous applause from many people in back. Canadian-Brit that I am, I just buried myself in the FT... |
In all my years of flying, I've witnessed this once - it was a UAL flight with EXTREME turbuelence over the rockies - trays, food, drinks thown everywhere. Folks threw up. Several needed medical attention. When we finally landed in DEN, everone clapped!!

I seem to recall people clapping on many of the flights I took on Wardair both domestic and to Hawaii years ago. I suppose all of the flights contained many infrequent flyers, and most of the pax on the Hawaii trips were 3 sheets to the wind!! (Including me!)

MD, Thank you for that link. As a transplanted European I can relate to this. Haven't laughed that hard in a while. Diego |
with me we were landing in IST, and there seemed to be a high number of turks on board, my guess is that they were going home or something. It wasnt a charter though, just an LH A321

Many Latin American passengers tend to clap from my travels down south.. Mexican's tend to do it often as well.. Once or twice I did it, but after a while it all just got to be nothing special anymore.. (the kid experience wasn't there anymore..)..

not to offend anyone here, but from what i've gathered it's generally people from poorer countries that tend to clap, i think it's a good thing though, as they show their appreciation for a safe flight, something regulars may not do to the same extent

Japanese passengers tend to clap on landing. I witnessed this on a couple of Japanese domestic flights, as well as a few UA/AC flights into NRT.
What I don't get is this...... I consider "touch down" to "turning off the runway" the most dangerous part of the flight. If the runway is wet, or if the reverse thrust isn't applied equally, a plane could end up in the grass. When a plane is in the air, the chance of hitting anything is much smaller than when a plane is on the ground, traveling at a rapid rate. I think if they want to clap, they should clap when the aircraft has safely turned off the runway. Or when the aircraft has parked at the gate. The good thing is.... the pilots can't hear the passengers clapping. |
OK, I've read through this thread and tried very hard not to throw in my 2 cents. (obviously not very successfully.... :( )
So..... people who tend to clap are: Charter passengers. Europeans. Phillipinos. Canadians. Americans. Italians. Brazilians. Israelis. Belgiums (whatever they are called) French. Turks. Mexicans. Poor people. and Japanese..... so far....... (don't believe me..... read the thread for yourselves......) The sad thing is, that I will never get these 5 minutes of my life back. MCM. |
