Wheelchair issue complicates restructuring

"The union representing Air Canada's reservation agents, embroiled in a fight over airport wheelchair services, is threatening to throw a wrench into the airline's restructuring by indefinitely postponing a vote to ratify its recent cost-cutting agreement.

The Canadian Auto Workers, which represents about 6,400 Air Canada reservation agents, charges that on Friday, the carrier informed its executives that the Greater Toronto Airport Authority was planning to wrest control of wheelchair handling at Pearson International Airport."The Star

So basically the CAW wants to sink the airline because the airport wants control over the wheelchairs.

So you don't think NEWS FROM THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE was a catchy enough thread for this story yesterday, airbus320? ;)

SH: And here I thought that the story was only about the bridge.... I need a stronger prescription for my glasses.

I missed that paragraph. Toutes mes excuses.

I think it was too catchy, i.e. didn't describe the contents.

I hate those damn golf carts!!!

So, does the GTAA now charge extra to the airlines for providing the wheelchair service? If not, then AC should have to layoff any extras. If yes, is the union correct that this will mean 75 jobs gone? I find it hard to believe that 75 full-time-equivalent AC jobs are dedicated to wheelchair service at Pearson. Maybe 75 are affected, but dedicated?

The union representing Air Canada's reservation agents has reached a tentative agreement with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, settling a potentially high-stakes scrap over airport wheelchair services.
