FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: Adam Smith
The original forum lounge thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues, status or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information Ė if itís about AC/Aeroplan, it doesnít belong in this thread. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs, destinations, in-flight travel tech or anything best discussed elsewhere on FT may should be posted to the relevant forum, as this thread isn't meant to import travel topics to this forum.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge, that doesn't mean that the FT rules don't apply here (they definitely do), please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities, and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

For those interested, previous versions are here: original 2004 - 2014 thread, 2015, 2016 , 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

I'm only home for a handful of days here and there between now and the end of April. Doing a YOW-do while I am stuck in Europe or Asia seems cruel as, you know, I would RatherBeInYOW ;-) But who knows maybe it will line up!

Sounds like the YYC Do, except on Eastern Time.

Naturally, I start travelling a lot again towards the middle / end of April.

No reason there couldn't also be a locals nano-DO.

For some reason, a Vegas area restaurant review made me think of this year's Forum Lounge OP.

When's the microDO? I'll be there this and next weekend.

//though codfather's plane may need some fuel stops.

I was having fun rewriting some of this in my head. For example:

Unassuming Charm Meets British Newfie Flair

Or should that be PAL?

Okay, maybe I can only stretch this so far. I guess I'm not completely over COVID yet.

I Guess Canadians are "Special"

Every so often, I am reminded that online retailers must think people are really stupid. Especially those of us who can see the US border from their house and have a mailbox down there. Here's today's egregious example thanks to an unnamed global media company.

The seminal album Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings turns 50 this year, and there's a interesting re-release that's been getting decent reviews. So, why not continue to feed my vinyl addiction?

Well, I could buy this release (with free shipping) on their US store:

Or, I could buy exactly the same release (with shipping extra) on their Canadian store:

With an implied exchange rate of 2.76 CAD to USD, the only word that comes to mind is rapacious. Sheesh!

Is this only due to retailers simply charging whatever they want, or does this also have something to do with taxation and import duties?

An interesting thought, but No.

The duty on vinyl records is zero, and both prices are shown before tax (which would be 5% GST).

Sounds like you should take a trip to Smuggler's to buy it in the US.

Yes. No.

Yes to Smuggler's. No, I'll just get the album sent to my US address.

Reading in the AS forum, SFO and surrounding area is a mess right now. Hopefully those that live in the bay area are okay.

I guess it's time for a reminder that the lounge thread is for things that aren't about AC. A number of recent posts have been moved to a new 2025 status progress thread and the status qualification overview thread.

I know there are a few Lego fans here. A few Bricklink sets are open for preorders and one is sold out already.

I'll be out of the country that day, but don't consider me special.

Maybe a new thread if your semi serious?
