FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: Adam Smith
The original forum lounge thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues, status or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information – if it’s about AC/Aeroplan, it doesn’t belong in this thread. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs, destinations, in-flight travel tech or anything best discussed elsewhere on FT may should be posted to the relevant forum, as this thread isn't meant to import travel topics to this forum.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge, that doesn't mean that the FT rules don't apply here (they definitely do), please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities, and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

For those interested, previous versions are here: original 2004 - 2014 thread, 2015, 2016 , 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Sounds like you need better friends.

Friends that will pay for their own room. Tinder matches that will invite me to their place.

So my people manager has put a vague "feedback and action plan" meeting on my calendar for Thursday. With his boss.

Any, especially IT, PplMgrs explain why this would be, except to intentionally torture me for 44 hours?

Sounds like a pretty lousy thing for a people manager to put you through… why not reach out and ask if there’s anything you need to do to prepare for the meeting?

You likely have the best guess here, as you should have the best knowledge about your company’s process, your own performance, company’s overall direction, your relationship with your manager, and, politics, if you want to call it that way. Also take a peek at your manager’s calendar and it may reveal some clues.

Worst case scenario, book a long trip that you always want to do but never had the time to do. Need some ideas?

Could be many things. Though I don't trust "HR meetings" scheduled for the "end of the week".

Last time I had one I was like 50% sure I was getting fired (not that I thought they had cause), but it turned out to just be the new HR rep introducing herself to certain key people.

The calendar invite definitely could have been phrased better.

If they were going to fire you, wouldn't they just have your boss put a random placeholder in your calendar so as to avoid alerting you? Or just not schedule anything at all? It's certainly what I would do. Then again, I worked with some very incompetent HR people at an IT company not long ago.

Is it possible this is part of some goal-setting exercise for the year? A previous organization I worked at was big on those, although it was often late March or April before the goals for finalized and "year-end" evaluations often took place in October or early November, rendering the process largely useless in my view.

"Feedback and action plan" doesn't sound like firing, though it does sound like PIP/Focus, etc. If it's indeed performance related, then OP should have known about it long ago. If it's politics, better to find a new job anyway, especially when skip manager is already involved.

It's also possible that the meeting is about feedback and action plan of a direct report or someone OP closely works with. In this case OP should have known too.

If so then OP's manager should have the same meeting with everyone in the team, which OP can easily check and find out. And performance review cycles are usually well communicated within the organization.

And this discussion makes me wonder, how often do people have 1v1 with their direct reports, manager, and skip manager? What do you usually cover in these 1v1s?

Yeah, if they were going to fire you they'd just call you into an impromptu meeting, no time to prepare.

My best guess from what you've told us is that this is either a performance-management thing (if things haven't been going smoothly) or they're about to introduce new and frustrating KPIs.

"Sensitive" organizations now have those types of meetings first thing Monday morning. Usually with a calendar invite sent late Sunday night.

I know it’s not usually how we roll around here, but it came up in a group chat this morning and was too on-topic to ignore.
