FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: Adam Smith
The original forum lounge thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues, status or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information if its about AC/Aeroplan, it doesnt belong in this thread. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs, destinations, in-flight travel tech or anything best discussed elsewhere on FT may should be posted to the relevant forum, as this thread isn't meant to import travel topics to this forum.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge, that doesn't mean that the FT rules don't apply here (they definitely do), please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities, and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

For those interested, previous versions are here: original 2004 - 2014 thread, 2015, 2016 , 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

I'm too lazy to go check, but I got two of those at the Rum festival thing in SF last year for free. They had been opened, but it was easier for me to schlep them home than for the El Dorado rep to try to fly home with open bottles

I was going to chime in that AC has removed SCL from their schedule. So glad to hear I'n not the only one who is confused. Still not sure what SCL they are referring to.

As for rum, my best taste was in a back room at Casa del Habano in the Partagas in Havana with a gentleman named Abel who offered us some cigars 'not available for sale' and aged rum from a bottle who's label I had never seen before nor since. As with most things the surrounds, conditions and circumstances enrich the appreciation for the finer things, so regardless of how much I could try it would be impossible to recreate the experience.

I believe that the reference is to the Smith Cocktail Lab. A mythical place in a faraway Northern land, reputedly with no regular service from AC. I could be wrong.

I got really excited Friday night, because we had a company dinner, and I got to put it on my credit card. It was a little under $1200 after tip, an that's probably 90% of my reimbursable expenses in the past 5 years.

Free points!

I also have the urge to pay for company expenses on personal cards and get reimbursed later. Flights and hotels have to be booked through a travel portal so the big expenses are always paid via company card. Once you are a manager or even team lead, it's natural to pay for most of the team social events. That's how I racked up... umm, an undisclosed amount of points, and tolerated some team events that I had no intention to attend.

I recognize that guy!

Too bad there is something else on teevee tonight that people in Canada might be watching ;-)

Pretty much every company I have worked for has a "senior person at the table pays" policy. Prevents me from telling one of my employees to pay and then I just approve their expense and as a result there is no oversight on the expense (besides from finance, who are usually easily overridden). My current company requires me to list *every* person present that I am paying for, employees or customers or partners or whatever.

Do we have any good divorce lawyers here?

My wife hadn't been anywhere in 2024. This weekend, we went to YVR and visited her grandfather. She is thus officially a FOTSG.

"In sickness and in health" and all that nonsense, sure, but I never promised to love a FOTSG!

Surely this is grounds for a divorce on terms favourable to me...

I have it on good authority that she was relegated way back to the Y cabin on said trip. While you humbly took the seat in the lonlier J cabin. Are we sure she doesn't already have a divorce lawyer on retainer?

(forget ambulance chasers at accident scenes, a good modern angle for lawyers might be to hand out business cards to single spouses in Y).

Has she been in addiction recovery? She's the only success story I have heard of on FT who has been able to beat a long term flying + airline status addiction.

For future booking as a couple, be sure to use a common or anonymous name on her half of the PNR. (Hmm... 'Mrs. Smith? Good job, seems you already planned ahead?) Easier to find a replacement spouse or mistress that can still fly her tickets without change fees.

Considering:
  • We've taken >400 flights together, >350 in multi-cabin aircraft, and I think only sat in different cabins 4 times (i.e. 1% of the time)
  • We long ago agreed to maintain seperate finances, but I fund the vast majority of our travels
  • I'm 6'4", while she's 5'6" ("economy-sized", in her words)

I think she's doing pretty well out of the whole deal

This is an excellent idea!
