Nagoya still has Varig. The only Star carrier serving North America direct from Nagoya.

To earn AC miles go YYZ-NRT on AC then use NH(Also a star partner) for NRT-NGO

There's been another bombing of a western residential compound, but not my Mom's. Time to ask for another raise, I suppose.

There were also some smaller bombings last week, as well as some aborted attempts. In one case the bomber was killed by security forces, while in another the bomber(s) were captured.

It's obviously none of my business, but with an increasing number of attacks, rather than asking for a second salary increase, I'd ask for the next flight out back to Canada!

Would you also have if you were in the MD/DC/VA area last fall?

Larry, while there is some danger to living in Saudi or the middle east in general sometimes the danger is overrated when you are sitting in Canada. I lived in Saudi and in Iran and was in Iran when the revolution started; some foolish expats did not take the normal precautions and got killed but almost everyone got out safely. I was also in Saudi when terrorists overran the main mosque in Mecca and the country was locked down and most western radio signals were jammed. Our compound was guarded day and night by soldiers and one morning I spoke with two of them and noticed one had the buttons on his uniform mismatched and the other guy had his shoes on the wrong foot. The only thing we did differently was to not carry our home made booze around with us on the public roads for a week or so.

I don't know what you are trying to say Ken, so I'll just leave it there... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Last fall there was a sniper killing people at random around the Washington DC area, including one incident that took place a block from the hotel I was staying in. So acts of random violence can happen to you anywhere.

Beyond that, fleeing in the face of acts such is to simply give in to the terrorists, letting them decide when and where you go. If everyone behaved that way, and sadly most do, then the terrorists have won.

One only needs to look at the hit western economies and societies are taking in the face of the NYC and other attacks to see that contrary to the bravado coming from most politicians, the terrorists are clearly in the driver's seat, winning.

Well, after 11 years in The Kingdom, my mother finalllly came home for good this September to YXU (where I have only visited a few times). I have been to Saudi only twice... once for 5 weeks, once for 2 months. I like much about it, and of course have things I would change. But, not for me to decide.

I wish the news would be more specific on whick compounds were hit/affected during such attacks. Relatives count on the news to ease worry after each incident.

As for the safety... despite agression in the news and above mentioned precautions. I found it amazingly safe place to travel, sighsee, and live. A great satandard of living, some great oprotunities, and wonderful people.

An interesting country with it's own growing problems... I"m sure Canadians can relate... Although our problems are of a differnnt type, it doens't make us better or worse. I wish the western world would stop trying to make other cultures fit into thier idea of civilized.

But one thing I would like to see is truth in the news reporting...... unfortunately its impossible to know the truth in these incidents. If you believe what they report, I fear its far from reality.

Not a rant, not trying to change others opinions... just a view I have... ( and I reserve the right to change it as my view changes too :-p)

I wish the world to solves its own and not others' problems.
