Yea, someone is walking by for a second, vs the person next to you that can see into your seat for the entire flight..

They definitely offer a increased level of privacy compared to no door. I think my value coming when you are sleeping. Its not great when careless passengers are walking up and down the aisle inches from your face. The door helps a good amount on that.

Oh. Let's ask Midjourney, shall we?

What is with the obsession with doors? What are y’all doing in your pods? Unless you have nuclear codes on your laptop, even then get a privacy screen on your computer. The door is unnecessary and I never understood it.

That seems promising. The basic J product. But I guess we need a or some sort of pod flat bed too.

This seems nice.

What about economy?

Oh.

I guess we should just remove every "unnecessary" feature from airplanes. Reminds me, I think the champagne they serve is very unnecessary and I have never understood it. Unless you are trying to get drunk, then just bring your own alcohol.

I'm going with bunk beds

The doors consume space that could otherwise be put to better uses (I fundamentally disagree with you about how much privacy they add, and I've flown the BA Super Diamond seat with the doors very recently, so this is quite fresh in my mind). They also add weight and complexity, which leads to increased costs that are ultimately borne by passengers, and who knows what maintenance-related problems they may lead to as they undergo wear and tear. The inflatable mattresses sounded great in theory too...

Oh.

One positive I can see with this design is that when someone invariably hurls on the LAS-YYZ vomit comet, it'll blend with the colour of the seat.

I agree with the pros and cons. I think where I am getting lost is, generally the seats that have doors have a more "suite" type feel (ex. ANA The Room). If you compared a seat that has a door, but in the open position, with a seat that has no door. Generally the one that has the door in the open position will have much more privacy, as well as a shield to the side of your body.

A good look at this is comparing Air France, before the door was added, the side of your body has no barrier. Now, even with the door open, there's a barrier which in my opinion makes it feel a lot more private.

So yea, may not come down to the actual door, but if it has a door, the rest of the seat will be more private as well.

My original Midjourney prompt, asking for a hellscape seat that would prolong the agony and inflict pain on the passenger, was rejected by Midjourney. It seems the AI has some ethical limits.

The value of the door really depends on the seat design. If all the seats have your head far from the aisle I'm not as concerned, but a number of other staggered designs like Polaris have every other seat very exposed to the aisle which makes it harder to sleep.

Flew BA's new seat with the door LHR-YYZ in August... whole family liked the door. We flew Etihad 787 J YYZ-AUH RT back April and a door would have been nice with the reverse layout as the person opposite the isle is basically looking right in on you.

Flying BA again in 2 months.. will see if the door coolness fades or we get equipment swapped. Will also be trying the interesting looking Finnair a350 bucket seat.. see how that goes!

I am too much of a pragmatist. What happens to all those drinks and that pot of boiling liquid during turbulence?

Very interested in how this seat feels in real life. From a maintenance and upkeep perspective, having few moving parts is certainly a perk for the airline.

Definitely let us know how the trip goes!
