Mid level status?

Has anybody heard if Aeroplan is considering a "mid-level" status, say around 60,000 q miles. It is such a huge jump from 35,000 to 100,000.

How would this work with *A??
It could only be within Canada. Already * airlines have no idea what upgrades/perks are allowed with other airlines * programs.
NZ was an example of that, at least with me last week... they flat out told me the offer no "perks" for other * programs. They do and the problem was fixed, but it reminded me its best to stick with AC and UA which have better understanding of each others programs.

I suspect most likely result would be that first two (18K, 35K) would map to Star Silver and next two (60K, 100K) would map to Star Gold.

Maybe better to leave it as-is, with 35K and 100K mapping to Gold.

There had been serious talk because it was recognized that there was a huge gap between Elite and SuperElite that was particularly unfair to domestic fliers. I suspect, however, that AC has opted to increase the status mileage earned to make it a bit easier to reach SE: return to giving 125% for upgraded domestic flights, 150% to paid J. And at the other end, removing status miles from the lowest fares is going to reduce the number of Elites, no doubt.

SE had originally been designed for intercontinental travellers, Elite for domestic/transborder ones. The benefits were tailored accordingly, and it was felt elites would be satisfied with what these were. Of course, status envy also comes into play, 'cause the top tier is the top tier.

As for the STAR equivilency, if AC did introduce another tier, all three would be Gold. AC would have a revolt on its hands if it removed STARGold benefits from Elite. [Yes I know AC has caused revolts in the past, but to do such a stupid thing while trying to bring on board new investors would be too much.] At the same time, it is time for STAR to introduce a new top tier of its own. Two just doesn't cut it for those SEs and 1Ks who get no better benefits from the alliance than if they were Es and PremExs.

I agree SE only works on AC and UA at the moment. But i have not heard of any talk about *A changing this.
Empress? have you heard anything?

Third level will not happen on Star Alliance in the near future.

I suggest decreasing the segments necessary for SE. 150 is too high - particularly revenue is better correlated to flights taken than miles. I say this from experience - as of today, I have 170 Aeroplan status segments in 2003 (not considering another 20 or so AP reward and ONE WORLD segments). But I "only" have 103,000 Q miles. I will hit 200 segments by Dec 31 - maybe 220. And a majority have been on RJ and Dash 8.

Agreed it is a huge jump for normal people from 60K to 100K, but as a flyertalker, we all know it is just two quick SIN runs http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I think if you are that far past 35K and can use the international upgrade benefits and the instant KK then it is worth doing. (The threshold bonuses are nice too!) Easy now that the Sat night only stay trips are back. Or there is the SEA-LHR. One SIN run, two SEA-LHR would get you SE http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
