"We're also taking a closer look at orange juice, bread, chips, chocolate bars, coffee and bottled water... It's the little things that make a big difference."

She is right that it is the little things that make difference. Unfortunately AC is cutting the little things and by doing so their throats at the same time.

I wonder if they cut the biottled water we will have to drink from the lav taps. yuch, imagine the bugs in there (This was discussed in another thread)

I for one would much rather keep AC flying than have a lemon in my drink. AC need to do lots of things to return to profitability and if that means cutting lemons and little snacks so be it. I bet that half the time they offer anyone a cookie or chips, those people don't even want really want it but take it anyways. They should just charge a minimal charge and people will decide if they REALL want the stuff.
At my office, we have a pop machine and pay $0.25 for a drink. People used to abuse the free drink policy and now they don't anymore.

While this is pretty "chincy" of AC, I suppose the cost savings will be pretty high over time, so I just hope they continue to have tomato juice...my last two flights ONLY had bloody mary mix boarded!

They have already gone down that slippy slope. There was a thread last week where they left without the catering, including the bottled water.

There will be the day when the only carry-on allowed will be the picnic basket full of snacks and drinks.

Darn right! It's the little things (that don't cost much) that make a big difference to customers.

Cutting (actually nibbling) away at the window dressing is the easiest thing to do. Unfortunately,
doing the quick and easy thing does not address the fundamental, long term planning and reforms
that must be done.

And BTW, the cost savings of no lemons would pay for how much of the flight? 2 feet? 20 feet?

I was on two transcons this week and the service was excellent on both with plenty of food and two choices of entrees each way. And the flts were very full.

If AC is starting to think smarter good for them. They will make some mistakes along the way but getting any costs in order and normalized are good signs, I'd say.The AC doomsayers here should just fly WS and get nothing much on a flt. They do that very efficiently;so should AC be able to do it.

Axe one million-dollar-a-year exec, and you've probably covered the capatalized cost of lemons, limes, and a whole lot of other stuff into perpetuity.

'Course cutting back on the small inexpensive things that customers really appreciate (like foamies on the headsets) will annoy customers, which of course is the main benefit they are looking for.

So how many more "steps" until WS actually offers more than AC?

This is nickel and diming at its very best.

A challenge to AC: Ask the employees how to save $$$$ in procedures and processes in all departments. And to motivate people to look hard at the organization and release their creativity, give them 5-10% of the annual saving as a bonus. They will come up with tenfold the lemons.

I think the way this article was written was a little misleading. What they are talking about is cutting back on wastage. They are not going to get rid of the lemons just cut back how many are boarded due to the amount that get thrown out. if you go to the following link
http://www.achorizons.ca/en/default.asp

and click on new horizons in the left corner there is a story there that explains the whole thing. After you read it it will make alot more sense and you can see how this will legitamently save money.
