"Both" in that on my Chase Visa it posted as Air Canada Buyatab, the latter being the company that actually handles the gift cards. It did not code as airfare, I am pretty sure that Buyatab company does the actual payment processing.
I actually mulled over how you could buy and refund Air Canada flights to get 5x AMEX MR or Citi TYP, but I suppose if you don't care for the mile flexibility this promo is a bit better because you get 5x AP and whatever your CC earns.

As of November with the change over you can use air canada gift cards to pay the taxes and the fees on an aeroplan booking. This may be a good deal to get the gift cards now on a little bit of a sale.

I am trying to buy a gift card but keep getting an email saying it can't be processed. I called Amex and they said everything was good on their end. I called the Air Canada gift card department to see if someone could help and ended up waiting 20 mins on hold. I guess I will try again tomorrow. Who knew it would be this hard to give my money away.
