Renumbering of TATL flights (2020/21)
While looking into flights for next year, I noticed that the following flight numbers have changed:
YYZ-FRA late afternoon (~5p.m.) departure:
AC872 -> AC840
This seems weird - that flight was operated as AC872 for at least the last 20-25 years.
YYZ-FRA late evening (~9.30p.m.) departure:
AC876 -> AC842
Does anyone happen to know the reason for this? Was there a larger-scale reshuffling of TATL flight numbers?

Looks like sweeping changes on the renumbering of Europe flights. Appears they are numbered and sequentially grouped by destination and by departure time.
Examples:
800 YYZ-DUB (formerly 842)
836 YYZ-MUC (846)
852 YYZ-LHR (868)
854 YYZ-LHR (856)
856 YYZ-LHR (848)
858 YYZ-LHR (Unchanged)
872 YYZ-CDG (880)
824 YYZ-MAD (836)
820 YYZ-BCN (814)
896 YYZ-LHR (820)
880 YYZ-ZRH (878)
886 YYZ-VIE (898)
890 YYZ-FCO (Unchanged)
894 YYZ-MXP (Unchanged)
This will take some getting used to!

Seems logical, given the substantial re-numbering of domestic flights a while back.

Looks like YYC<>FRA is becoming 848/849. YYC<>LHR is staying 850/851.
YOW<>LHR now 868/869 - it was 888/889 before, wasn't it?

There’s definitely a theme/grouping by country:
YYZ-ZRH AC880/881
YVR-ZRH AC882/883
YUL-GVA AC884/885
YUL-CDG AC870
YYZ-CDG AC872
YUL-LYS AC876
YUL-NCE AC878
That said, you also have some outliers, possibly routes that won’t return/launch in 2021 ?
YUL-TLS AC814
YVR-CDG AC838
YYZ-ZRH AC880/881
YVR-ZRH AC882/883
YUL-GVA AC884/885
YUL-CDG AC870
YYZ-CDG AC872
YUL-LYS AC876
YUL-NCE AC878

Some things do change. Flew out of YMX on AC870 seated next to Cabinet minister Jean Luc Pepin's assistant. Pepin was sat two rows ahead as she and I got drunk together. (St.Malo Jacques Cartier)

Hmm.
In the beginning...Over two years ago Air Canada determined that the time had come to replace RESIII, a reservations system that to this day we are proud to have innovated and which for many years was considered by many as leading edge. But it’s also important to remember that 25 years ago, the World Wide Web was in its infancy, the first airport kiosk had not yet been deployed and the “flip phone” was all the rage.In the 25 years since then, technology has evolved at a furious rate. To keep pace, we patched, and patched and patched some more and in the process bolted one application after another into RESIII until it began to bear more than a passing resemblance to Frankenstein. It was definitely time for something new and after a rigorous and careful selection process, we announced our partnership with Amadeus to launch Altéa, a full Passenger Service System that included reservations, inventory, ticketing and departure control solutions
