2020 Air Canada Aeroplan Program

They launched the website a little early eh?

Edit: http://aircanada.com/aeroplan, since I'm feeling so generous after my spiced rum and Coke Zero, which I cannot currently get on board AC flights.

Edit: Chart shows some improvements (distance based within zones, fewer zones, allows something like YYZ-YOW or SFO-YVR to be cheaper). But lots of bad things. I'm unsure about how the new IKK works. I didn't realize it was capped to J. I'm also unsure about YQ on partners, based on wording.

(priority rewards - 50% off any booking, but you can never redeem for F with it)

Just like today’s Air Canada Altitude status, you’ll reach Aeroplan Elite Status based on the number of Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) or Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), and Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD), earned on eligible flights operated by Air Canada and the Star Alliance member airlines over the calendar year (January 1 through December 31). For non-Canadian residents, the required Status Qualifying Dollars will continue to be 50% lower than the published amounts found in the chart below.

Note that for members qualifying for Aeroplan Super Elite Status in 2022, the number of Status Qualifying Segments required will increase from 95 to 100.

Chart, since I forgot to post: https://www.aircanada.com/content/da...s-chart-en.pdf

YYT do is permanently dead since that was a strict deval.

Flight reward policy: https://www.aircanada.com/content/da...-policy-en.pdf

$39 booking fee for partner airlines, per ticket.

"Waitlisting Flight Rewards is not permitted" - EXTREMELY disappointed

Mixed cabin itineraries - Courtesy upgrade requests are not permitted, including on day of travel at the airport.

There are also different categories of bookings in each cabin. More miles for Latitude, fees waived. Fewer miles for Standard, pay through the nose. "Note that fees may be waived for eligible Elite Status Members"

The new program is launching on November 8, 2020. Looking forward to more specific details especially with credit card details.

Will the new status boost miles count towards MM program?

There are definitely a mixture of good and bad aspects in the new program, for my purposes.

I like the family account and YQ elimination for AC operated flights.

I don't like the overall devaluation of about 25% for the routes I would normally travel.

I also need to see how the YQ elimination on AC flights works out in reality - will they charge a higher amount of points due to their implied message that AC rewards will actually be a blend of fixed-mileage and market-fare points required? Or did I get that wrong?

This is a significant reduction in benefit.

I'm not surprised on the devaluation and I was expecting it given how much Aeroplan miles AC was selling. The family account is really interesting. Apparently up to 8 members of the household can share points for free. The status boost from credit card spending isn't as lucrative as US-based cards though. There's no AQD waiver or credit from using their credit cards.

It's not clear to me, from reading the published documents, whether it's just AC or every airline..

We cover cash surcharges.

On any Air Canada flight you purchase with points, we have eliminated additional airline surcharges. That could save you hundreds of dollars in cash at checkout. In fact, only taxes and third-party fees (such as airport fees) are listed in cash, and you can use your points to cover those, too.

If you’re booking a flight reward on another airline, there is a flat Partner Booking Fee of just $39 (per ticket) – which you can also cover with points.
That really sounds like there's only a $39 fee.

You can book Standard, Flex, or Latitude (or PY/J Lowest/Flexible). And every seat will be available for redemption. So it wouldn't surprise me if the extra miles were entirely due to you booking a seat that would never be available for redemption under the old scheme.

Yeah, that one definitely sucks, but I understand it. If you want YYZ-YVR-SFO with YYZ-YVR having I9, and YVR-SFO having J1 C0, you can buy a J fare to get J on both, or you can book a P fare with Y (or more likely M) on YVR-SFO. If you wanted J, you could have paid for J.

There's a lot of stuff I am fairly confident about that wasn't clear on the website.

"Status members can often book flight rewards for even fewer points."
"Primary Aeroplan Credit Cardholders can often book flight rewards for even fewer points."

Does that mean the 110k redemption is going to be 109k for an SE with the CC, or will it be 70k?

you can see the published changes here: https://www.td.com/ca/en/personal-ba...eprivilegeFAQ/

Nice! Where did you get that card picture from? It's not on TD's website. Still charge 2.5% for FX though! Doh!

jerryhung Aug 11, 2020 2:59 am

quite a devaluation though https://forums.redflagdeals.com/imag...ead-sad-16.png

Testing YYZ-TPE on EVA Air
Old program = it was 75K Y/150K J r/t

new program, NA-Pacific zone, 7501+ miles = ONE-WAY Partner 60K Y/85K J (120K Y/170K J r/t)

120K vs 75K in Y is a +60% increase, ...
