usually my process is go to the wineries, find what I like, and add on the bubble wrap sealed bags for the bottles. Then get the shipping box from the UPS store in downtown Napa (yes there is one, with really good hours) that is specifically designed to fit the bottles with extra padding. They will happily tape the box for you once done since you're buying the box from them.

Ship it as one of your bags on the flight home.

I've bought the boxes at the UPS Store in Sonoma rather than Napa, but same positive experience.

AC has been happy to accept the 12-bottle box (holding 9L of liquid) as checked baggage. It's very common for them at SFO in particular. I suspect at YLW too.

I've used these bags pretty successfully, there's two seals on them. +1 for the padded boxes if you buy enough to fill them.

Maybe you should put the bottle in the bag, then the bag inside the stock? ;)

Thought about that first, but then if the glass broke it'd shred the plastic and you'd lose liquid containment. This way you might lose the liquor to socks, but you wouldn't lose the rest of your bag (or ruin someone else's bag)

I have a pair of waterproof socks that would work well as they are heavy duty ;)

Just pad if well. I know someone whose bottle of Whisky broke in their luggage. It wasn’t good.

These are the ones I use and readily available in wine country... lol

i use something similar and they have not failed me yet. Just be sure to squeeze as much air out as possible and pack them somewhere near the interior of your suitcase.

When travelling, I purchase quality not quantity, so I would be far more upset about the contents than my socks should a bottle break. Which has not happened yet.

These bags are now part of my standard survival kit for the long trips when I actually check luggage.

I have definitely brought back 5+ bottles of various things accumulated in a trip - never experienced any actual breakage, but I did have a weird NZ pull cap come off a beer bottle once, volume was low enough it was just my belongings that got drenched.

I also remember picking up my then 18 y.o. brother from YVR and he REEKED of rum because one of his 5 bottles of rum shattered. No one at customs blinked when he declared nothing.

Good thing that no one here would ever reek of rum. Just wouldn't happen.

Yeah, the Coke Zero would probably mask it ;)

At 18 that probably should have triggered a closer look. ;)

Wouldn't it depend on which province he is from and their drinking age?

Or is it based on where you land? I honestly don't know.

Based on where you first enter Canada.

I wonder whether CBSA should look at relaxing that with the advent of OSS and through-checked bags, but that's the way it has always been. It had me quite concerned when I came back to Canada with some - very well-packed, unbroken - limoncello and wine when I was 18 (legal where I lived in Alberta/Quebec, but not in Ontario, where I landed). Thankfully no one at CBSA asked about it and I was fine.

AC reservations told me there is a 5 litre limit for wine as checked luggage.....is this incorrect? I want to check 12 bottles from YLW to YEG.....will be on a J fare so can check 2 bags.

You can pack containers of alcohol (including homemade wine and beer, and commercial products) in your checked baggage if:
  • The percentage of alcohol by volume is 70% (140 proof) or less.
  • The quantity does not exceed five litres per person for alcoholic beverages between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume.
Alcoholic beverages containing 24% alcohol or less are not subject to limitations on quantities.
