Tentative Schedule of Events
Friday, July 31
1900 NDT to 2300 NDT - Drinks/appetizers at a local pub or brewery (for those of you who can't make it for Friday evening, the main Do is Saturday! This is just a primer, as we say here on the rock!)
2300 NDT to 0300 NDT - George Street Festival (for those interested in a later night)
Saturday, August 1
POTENTIAL activities for the day:
- Whale watching with O'Brien's Boat Tours
- Bus tour with stops at all the local breweries
- Hike on North Head Trail on Signal Hill
- Etc.
1900 NDT to 2300 NDT - Dinner/drinks at a local restaurant (The Fish Exchange would be a good option)
2300 NDT to 0300 NDT - George Street Festival (again, for those interested in a later night)
Air Canada Promo Code for travel to YYT from any destination served by AC:
Your promotion code: FXDVBHJ1
The travel period begins Friday, July 24, 2020 and ends Saturday, August 08, 2020.
As the official airline of this AC DO, by using the above-noted promo code the following discounts should apply: 5% discounts will apply to standard fares, 10% flex fares & up for North America travel. 10% discounts apply on standard fares & up for International travel. 12% discounts apply to Business class fares (exception 5% on Business Class lowest for North America)
Popular Frequent Flyer Hotels
Delta by Marriott St. John's - closest major hotel to George street, partially renovated in the past year, many rooms have harbour views, club lounge
Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland - close to Signal Hill, but a bit further from George Street; panoramic views (best for views) and has a club lounge, but the hotel is very dated and long overdue for a renovation, and elevators are slow/unreliable
Courtyard by Marriott Downtown - good location near the Sheraton, good views, but typical Courtyard spec/amenities
Alt Hotel - new hotel, central downtown location, affiliated with Le Germain Group
Hilton Garden Inn - newer hotel, located near the Delta
Several local boutique options including the Jag, Blue, or Murray Premises for those wanting something with more local character

If the border closure gets extended another 10 days, the bovine and calf are 100% out, and while I think I could get across the border, I don't think I would.

@codfather what's the updated itinerary for the weekend? With the AP promotion, and my temporary home base of YWG this is a lot more enticing as a weekend trip. (pending MB and NFL both easing their provincial quarantines)

The move between levels is supposed to take 28 days, but even their own CMO says it may take less time to get to Level 2, so I would say Level 2 by time of the Do is highly probable.
Notably however, this still doesn't indicate whether "outsiders" will be allowed. Either way I don't think preemptively cancelling it is the right move yet. Perhaps everyone is not comfortable booking in uncertain times, but there will be some who are and they still should have a mini-do if that's what it becomes. I won't make it because I'm working, but if I wasn't, I'd expect final decisions to be made no earlier than early July.
We can always try again next July for those who miss it.

Your best bet would be to arrive Friday the 31st or Saturday the 1st. The main Do will be on Saturday. Even with the AE promotion I am hesitant on suggesting people book travel as I just don’t see NL easing those quarantine restrictions before September at the earliest.
I'd actually highly recommend people book these tickets if there's any remote chance they'd go. Worst case scenario you get your miles and money back. But I'd hate to decide to go on July 22, when I have to pay 50k r/t J instead of 25k.

It sounds like NL is set to move to Alert Level 2 next week a lot quicker than the original timeline, and at least there's talk of the regional bubble with the other Atlantic provinces that didn't seem to be of interest a week before, so that's progress. They've also been getting pressure from business leaders to open up the province. But given that NL is effectively COVID-free with no new cases in ~22 days, it also seems like they're being very cautious about opening up beyond that, so time will tell if they relax the other restrictions.
I'm still hoping to be able to get there in early August, but not making any bets or any non-refundable travel reservations.

Breaking: As well as an "Atlantic Canadian" travel bubble being announced today, the Premier/CMOH announced that, all things being equal, travel from other provinces to Nfld will be permitted from July 17th.
So attendees from elsewhere in Canada would seem to be OK for this. Those outside of the country not so much at this stage.

Not all bars on George are opening, unfortunately, and no guarantees we will be able to get a table without waiting in a long line. Drinks at a restaurant will be the play and we can explore the bars later for those who want to.

I assume we can make a reservation for a table?
What about all the "potential activities"? Any of those likely to be open?
