IAD-YUL AC8173 cancelled tomorrow Sun Mar 15 ?
Spent 3 hours on the phone calling United and AC to be re-booked since AC 8173 IAD-YUL tomorrow was cancelled.
Got a new email from AC without reason why the flight was cancelled and was re-routed via YYZ where I need to spend the night.
Will AC provide a hotel at YYZ?
Thanks!

Now AC websites says that the flight was cancelled due to government travel advisory and health and safety concerns.
However other Ac, UA, DL flights operate tomorrow out of IAD normally and - as the previous poster suggests - many flights/seats available out of DCA.
Is the reason AC gives to cancel 8173 an excuse not to compensate the pax?

Probably, but who knows. Just because one flight is cancelled due to advisory, doesn’t mean all flights will be. There could be lots of cancellations due to advisory and the airline is trying to consolidate where possible.

(pure speculation obviously) This is probably why no one (as far as I can tell) is getting any answers from cancelation insurance, they are waiting to see if the airlines will eat the bill first.

My son's BOS-YYZ flight yesterday was cancelled for the same reason (got him on the next flight so he is home safe). At a certain level of course it is bogus - I highly doubt the Canadian government is going through AC's flight schedule and choosing flights to be cancelled. But if the GoC has instructed AC to limit flights as much as possible, then it makes sense for them to consolidate. Has anyone ever seen this flight cancellation before the current crisis?

Yes. It is a standard term throughout the world. Most often used to describe anything out of the ordinary involving a government action at departure, arrival or enroute. E.g., during the most recent hostilities between Pakistan and India, numerous flights which crossed a broad swath of airspace on the subcontinent were rerouted or cancelled for "political situation" reasons. As it's IATA, it's a non-judgmental euphimism.
