Good memories

Good to me too. This prompted me to add up what I have redeemed (mostly for family friends and charities and only on Aeroplan-I also did a lot with Lufthansa Miles and More and Air China's club):

YEAR/AMT. REDEEMED
1992 97500
1993-95 260000
1996 375000
1997 555000
1998 175000
1999 357000
2000 590000
2001 449000
2002 643000
2003 385000
2004 420000
2006 375000
2007 55000
2008 230000
2009 458500
2010 105000
2011 326000
2012 150000
2013 425000
2014 270000
2015 570000
2016 319282
2017 445000
2018 842685
2019 320000
TOTAL 9,197,967

best promotion, 2 business class tickets anywhere in Star Alliance world which we used to go to South Africa in the 1990s (for flying 24 round trips YYC-YEG I think)
Youngsters have definitely benefited the most. I seldom use them for our travel.

Had lots of great memory with AP too. First confirmed J ticket, first confirmed F ticket, were all coming from AP redemption.

And I ended my relationship with AP in 2018.

That said; the program in 2013 is a lot different than it is today.

All you have to do is look at the scam charges for YQ for a Lufthansa First Class Ticket. It's over $1,000 for an eastbound USA to Germany.

I'll take the 120,000 First Class Mini RTW any day now!!

To this day I still pay everything with my CIBC Visa and hound CIBC each renewal date for bonus points. I am down to about 265,000 now. Likely use them for some business class tickets to Hawaii, San Francisco and visit friends in Whitehorse.

Not too many complaints about Aeroplan from me .....
Geeez, there's a huge light bulb that just came on over my head - I'm a long time CIBC Visa user, but I've never thought of pushing for bonus points at my renewal dates. I have one coming up this summer. How well do you normally make out? Are we talking a few thousand miles, or more significant? I'm always churning other cards for the bonus miles, but this is getting less lucrative, so I'm always looking for ways to snag my next lay-flat booking to a distant location.

Both my wife and I bank with CIBC plus I have an Investors Edge trading account and a self directed RRSP and RRIF. So when I call up they transfer you to a special department - the name I cannot recall right now - that deals with these kinds of requests.

I tell them I am a longtime, loyal CIBC customer and tell them about my investment accounts with Investors Edge and the fact I always pay my bill on time. I ask for points rather than a waiver of the annual fee. Usually they offer 10,000 points. I try to increase that to 15,000 - works most times ...
