That's a very early end to my work day.

Then I land at 0022, assuming everything's on time. That's late. The latest YYZ-YHZ I can put on the PNR departs 0925, so that's 9 hours to clear immigration, get somewhere to sleep (hotel if I'm with someone ($$$), dad's if I'm not), prepare for bed, fall asleep, sleep, get ready, get to the airport, clear security, and board the flight. So if I'm REALLY quick and lucky, I'll have 7 hours of sleep. But more likely 6.

Certainly not the end of the world, but I figure I'm better off just taking the red-eye, getting to YHZ around noon (ironically I can't catch the earlier flight off 754 without making use of standby), find a hotel, sleep for a few hours, then meet up with everyone.

The other alternative, as you said, is to take Friday off. But the cost of that far exceeds the cost of any hotel.
I forgot to comment on this earlier. My suggestion would have been to pick the option with the least likelihood of having to VDB yourself.....

I am trying to find a segment run for IF I end up being able to come! Perhaps YYT-YHZ-YUL-YOW-YFC-YHZ-YYT? That is what GF is producing right now!

It will cost me about $200 more than flying YYT-YQX-YHZ-YYT, but I think for all those segments it is worth it!

And oops, I did not mean to quote you, cow!

Gonna try and make it, but not sure yet.

Don't be too sure. Dal students have a habit of never leaving town. OTOH, at 1% vacancy you might have to hotbunk in residence if you ever visit.
