High-Risk Connection? SFO

Taking 796 - Arriving at 9:53PM
Have an flight departing at 10:30PM on UA, but a different itinerary
Will I make it? If the AC flight is delayed and I miss the connection, where do I stand with UA? High and Dry?

You mean a separate ticket? Not good...

vernonc Jan 16, 20 9:32 am

Wow. That seems way too close for comfort. Given ACs OTP I would not take that risk.
While it is doable it requires everything to run perfectly. Ideally you are in AC J or front of Y so you can disembark quickly. Then head up the escalator, thru the International G concourse, then take the escalator down to the corridor/bridge that leads toTerm 3 to the left just before you exit the security checkpoint. How far in term 3 will depend on where your gate is. Could involve some running and hopefully you do not have checked bags on 2 separate itins.
I normally frequent the Amex lounge in UA Term 3 before my AC departing flight at the International G gates. The lounge is right near the bridge to International G gates. It takes approx 10 mins quick walk. But that's to board a flight. It may take you longer to deplane, walk to term 3 and who knows how far your gate will be.

This is very risky, probably stupid. Depending on gates, it can take 10-15 minutes to transfer AC to UA and vice versa at SFO. You also need to deplane. If AC is even 10 minutes late, you are out of luck.

Good points,
Seated in J on YYZ-SFO
Departure gate is F5-10 for this flight
I can run as well

No, this is not a high risk connection. It is not a connection at all, just two unrelated separate tickets

I have no idea where you are coming from or going to, but unless the AC flight is significantly early, you have no chance at all of catching your next flight. Your UA ticket will auto-cancel and retain whatever value it has according to the fare rules. Probably nothing.

UA will ask you to remove your credit card from your wallet if you wish to travel on a later service to wherever you planned to go, unless you are extremely fortunate in having a kind agent take sympathy on you. Don't count on it and instead book yourself a much earlier AC flight. Like four hours earlier.

I think we should take bets on whether the OP will make it. I give it a 30% chance. I fly YYZ-SFO regularly and I cannot remember the last time AC arrived early. In fact, arriving on time may also stretch my memory.
And with the winter season and possible deicing.....

Well, given that there is only one event we are tracking, percentage chances are a bit meaningless, but it would be stupid to book this, as you are setting yourself up for additional expenses (flights, hotel rooms, etc).

The lowest MCT for SFO is 50 minutes for D-D connections, which I believe AC-UA connections are. Also keep in mind that boarding closes 15 minutes before departure for UA domestic flights.

I wish you good luck - you're going to need it.

YYZ-LAX and OTP is poor as well - Have been late past 3/4 times
Its also the last flight out of the night adding to the risk level
Sounds like Im gambling here with bad odds

Terrible odds. Do yourself a favour and book an earlier flight out of YYZ.

This is insane.

Average Delay: 40 minutes - 1 hour

I wouldn't take a connection less than 90 minutes even if it was on the same ticket.

Symmetre Jan 16, 20 10:21 am

In view of AC's brutal OTP, I'm not sure the OP is safe even by taking the earlier flight.

Stranger Jan 16, 20 10:24 am

When on separate tickets I normally provide myself with at least a 3 hours connection time. There were a couple of instances where it was not possible, I took a chance and I lost. That is, over a 10, maybe 15 years period.
