Standby and upgrade list
Can anyone enlighten me on the app Standby and Upgrade list? Not sure how I can see if I have a chance or not of upgrading...
First tab called Standby shows
Business Available
PE Full
First tab called Standby shows
Business Available
PE Full
Economy Full
then it has three names listed 1- 2- and 3-
Second tab called Upgrade shows
Business class
Capacity 30 Booked 26 Checked-in 5
it then has 7 names listed (mines is #4 ), but the names are different than the standby tab, except the #1 in standby is the same as #3in Upgrade (maybe coincidence).
Is there hope that no one buys J and I get the last seat upgrade but I don't understand the standby list?
having business for a 10:10 flight overnight would be so nice, it's the 10th or 12th time this year I run AC90 or 91 so fingers crossed.

Aside from your questions that a simpleton like me has difficulty understanding, I'll tell you this from experience...
90/91 are very tough for eUps. As an SE on O fares I usually just sneak in.
You are #4 on the list now but that is subject to change as more people check in. What is your fare basis? Status?

# 1 on standby and # 3 on upgrade is the same person.
They are confirmed in Y without a seat assignment (GTE), hence why they show on the "standby" list.
They're also waitlisted for an upgrade to J.
It's certainly possible you clear, but I wouldn't bet on it at this point. Ask again in 12 hours.

The plane is usually full of SEs and MMs and often very few J seats even available for upgrade.
I've certainly missed on an O fare going down on Sunday or returning Friday.

Look at the availability below, in two weeks, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Slim as usual.

Missed this upgrade despite the checkmark, and concierge confirmation.
I even missed an upgrade despite getting the checkmark and concierge confirmation of upgrade on AC90, as SE in full O.

Sorry for not being clear, I tried to edit my message but this forum doesn't let me post more than 5x per day.. and for them editing is posting. It doesn't make the new user experience very fun on these forums.
I just want to understand better the waiting lists
I have been bumped to 5th, so how is the priority set? If you are SE you bump lower levels even last minute? Number of miles, original ticket class (I am in Latitude)?
I am still a little confused by the way the system works.
Can't wait for the 3x per week daytime new flight to YUL coming in December!

You only show up on the list once you've checked in, so if people check in later, they can appear in their correct spot (above you).
You're prioritized by cabin (PY > Y), status (SM > SE etc.), fare class (Y > M etc.), then check-in time.
J checked in 26/26. You're 5th for 4 seats. You'll get a seat in PY for sure. If PDM determines anyone can't make it (3 minutes from now), you'll get a J seat.
I'd advise waiting until the end in case there are no shows since you'll be right at the top of the list.
Edit: You're now in PY and first on the list for J.

Absolutely.
Keep in mind that a healthy majority of people check-in online, before they even get to the airport. A traffic jam or a flat tire on the way to the airport, a last minute medical issue before you leave home, a missed or delayed inbound connecting flight -- there are plenty of reasons why someone who has checked in, may still no-show in time for the flight.
It can even happen once the passenger is at the airport on time. Heck, I've done that myself - it was a late night departure in a time zone (SFO) that made it feel even later for me ... some wine was consumed in the lounge ... an inadvertent nap occurred ... and the plane left without me.
Bottom line - if you're hoping for an upgrade, and you're at the top of the list, you should wait to board until the gate agent tells you the J cabin has boarded full (vs checked in full). All you need is one person to be on a delayed connecting flight. Or, ahem, consume too much wine in the lounge
