Air Canada AOG
A friend of mine was coming to a family function from EWR to YQM on AC via YOW. His flight to YOW got cancelled due to technical. AC put him on the flight on UA direct flight from EWR to YHZ. However is flight was delayed and his connection from YHZ to YQM was missed. Since the next flight was YHZ to YQM was the next day, he could not wait and hence he took a taxi to YQM where he had a car.
Is there anything he can do to claim the taxi fare at least from Air Canada? It is all on Air Canada and one ticket.

After the fact? Expect a fight. AC has cheaper solutions than a taxi.
Did he ask and then just take his expensive solution over a hotel or bus tic to? Or not ask and take it?

What's that, a 2.5 hour cab ride? I hope it was a fabulous family function.
Surely a car could have been rented for less? Or a bus?
There is no possible way AC is going to pay out on this.

He could not get a rent a car as all were booked he says. There is no bus at all and no trains either. This is about a 3 hour drive most of the time. Yes it was important as it was only for 3 days including 2 days of traveling.

I guess the problem is that the last flight and last bus to Moncton leave around 16:30.
But if their were no rentals available at the airport then why not go in to Halifax proper to get a rental? It would surely be cheaper than a taxi.
I guess the biggest problem is not leaving any leeway for travel interruptions before an important family function/meeting.

Thank you all very much. Yes if he had told me his route earlier on I would have advised not to take the route as Halifax to Moncton has just two flights per day. You miss the later on and you are stuck in Halifax till the next morning. I will be seeing him today and getting more details as to what happened in Halifax with AC. I have had these kinds of experiences with AC too and been hung out to dry on my own at Halfax with flight cancellations. He is not very familiar with flying so do not know how to deal with these kinds of situations at all.

What's the "Canadian Transport Agency" going to do?
His first step should be Air Canada. They will likely provide some form of compensation for the forced overnight, but unless pre-approved I wouldn't expect a refund of the taxi fare. That was a choice the traveller made.
