They didn't exactly PAY him $50M, he cashed in options he was granted when the stock was a lot lower. Its (possibly excessive) but at least long-term comp. (And, though its an accounting entry, its not cash out of AC's bank accounts).
As for AC itself, they can thank their virtual monopoly in Canada, where they charge canadians more than double for equivalent routes than the americans (e.g. YVR-YYZ vs LAX-NYC).
Having said that, I find their non-rogue product to be tolerable.
